CLARENCE CLEMONS - the Big Man with the big horn - died Saturday of complications from a stroke he suffered last weekend, said Bruce Springsteen's spokeswoman. He was 69 years old. Here's more from Rolling Stone and the New York Times. And here he is in 1984, wailing, shaking 'em, and delightful as Bruce's foil on "Sherry Darlin'." The A.V. Club obit has still more video. And Spinner has one of his final appearances -- in Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory." BUDDY HOLLY: Rave On, the star-studded tribute album, is advance streaming via NPR. BOB MOULD read from his autobiography, answered audience qquestions and played a mini-set at the UBS Forum. NELLIE McKAY plays a set on the Mountain Stage. JAPANESE POPSTARS are advance streaming Controlling Your Allegiance. SONIC YOUTH: "Out and In" is a previously unreleased track (2000) from a forthcoming four-vinyl-LP box set. BATTLES dropped the danceable math-rock of "Futura" on Fallon. THE MOUNTAIN GOATS: John Darnielle gives The Atlantic the backstory of "Dance Music." THE HISTORY OF INDIE: A Guardian playlist which inexplicably skips The Replacements. GUIDED BY VOICES: Robert Pollard talks to the Wall Street Journal and suggests the reunion may be more than touring. VINCENT MOON, the French filmmaker responsible for the Takeaway Shows, is profiled by the New York Times. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Green Lantern tops the chart with 52.7 million against a 200 million budget. If not for the 3-D premium ticket price, this would have been in the 40s. The NYT says it fizzles, but the WB may feel relieved that it did even this well given the intially bad marketing and nearly-universal negative reviews. Worldwide receipts may produce a breakeven. Super 8 drops 40 percent to the second slot with 21.3 million (and 72.8 million against a 50 million budget), which ain't bad considering the extra-wide openings of not only Green Lantern, but also Mr. Popper's Penguins, which debuted at No.3 with 18.2 million against a 55-65 million budget. Jim Carrey just ain't the draw he once was. X-Men First Class took a hefty 52 percent hit in the fourth slot with 11.5 million, a victim of the Lantern. However, the mutants cross the 100 million mark here, with more than that overseas. The Hangover Part II rounds out the Top 5 with another 9.6 million; it has grossed over 450 million worldwide against an 80 million budget. TOM CRUISE: Access Hollywood has the first look at him in Rock of Ages. MAD MEL UPDATE: Gibson is now dating a goth model. JOHN MALKOVICH talks to Andrew Dickson on video about being back on stage, John Wayne Gacy, and why he won't take lectures on politics from The Guardian. KEANU REEVES talks about his first book, Ode to Happiness. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Marvel drops a dozen stills from the upcoming movie. THE TOP 25 HIGHEST-PAID MUSIC ACTS, according to Forbes. TERROR in the USA: Yonathan Melaku, a US Marine Reservist from Ethiopia and a Muslim, was arrested inside Arlington Cemetery for carrying suspicious package labeled ammonium nitrate. He also had a notebook with phrases such as "Al Qaeda," "Taliban rule," and "defeated coalition forces" written in it. OUR FRIENDS, THE SAUDIS: A Saudi woman defiantly drove through the nation's capital Friday while others brazenly cruised by police patrols in the first forays of a campaign that hopes to ignite a road rebellion against the male-only driving rules in the ultraconservative kingdom. PAKISTAN: US officials say Pakistan has apparently tipped off militants at two more bomb-building factories in its tribal areas. The officials say that allowed the militants to flee after US intelligence shared the locations with the Pakistani government. AFGHANISTAN: Pres Karzai claimed the US is in peace talks with the Taliban. EL WILLY DANCES: Let's go to the video. COOPER the CAT: From budding photographer to media personality and author. UNPERMITTED MONKEY, doing the work Americans won't do. RATTLESNAKES don't like to be poked. I didn't think this needed to be publicized, but apparently not everyone got the memo. THE ANARCHIST Dog-Walking Collective.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE: ...with THE TURTLES! First cracking the Top Ten in 1965 with their cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me, Babe." they made the Top 30 later that year with the similar-sounding "Let Me Be," written by P.F. Sloan. Their early 1966 hit, "You Baby," was written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri; you may recognize the voice introducing the sync of the band performing on the streets of L.A. An album cut from the You Baby album, "Outside Chance," was co--written by Warren Zevon. "Happy Together," rejected by countless performers, became both their biggest hit and their signature song, knocking the Beatles' "Penny Lane" from the No. 1 slot in the Spring of 1967. "She'd Rather Be With Me" was of the same vintage. "Elenore," with its unique use of the term et cetera, was a jab at their label for demanding more hits like "Happy Together," but went on to hit the Top Ten anyway. Near the end, the band appeared on the Mike Douglas show to play "House on the Hill." For many years after the band dissolved, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman went by the name Flo & Edde, because their contract barred from using the Turtles name or their own names. The duo continued to record their own material, but were heard by most adding their trademark harmonies to hits like T. Rex's "Bang A Gong" and Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart." BOOKER T. JONES stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session. THE CIVIL WARS also stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session. JAMES VINCENT McMORROW also stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session. DEATH did a twofer for Daytrotter. LIAM FINN is advance streaming FOMO. 25 FAVORITE ALBUMS of 2011 (So Far), according to NPR. 16 AWESOME LED ZEPPELIN COVERS, courtesy of Paste. EDDIE COCHRAN: "Summertime Blues." Ain't no cure for 'em. THE BEST MUSIC FOR SUMMER, according to PopMatters. JOHN VANDERSLICE talks to All Shook Down about seeking discomfort, tripping on acid, and making pure art. (Thx, LHB.) ALINA SIMONE talks to the Wall Street Journal about her new album and book. SLY STONE pleads not guilty to cocaine charges. LESTER BANGS tweaks Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground in this rare video from the Creem offices. CUTOUT BIN: From Alice Cooper to Roy Orbison, from The Coasters to The Jam, from Katrina & the Waves to The Guess Who, plus Iggy Pop, Tom Petty, Little Richard, She & Him, Springsteen and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are now streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM. NOW SHOWING: THis weekend's wide releases are Green Lantern, which is currently scoring 20 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Mr. Popper's Penguins, which is scoring 41 percent. RYAN REYNOLDS pens an Entertainment Weekly cover story on... Ryan Reynolds. HUGH HEFNER made changes to the upcoming "Mrs. Hugh Hefner" cover. Crystal Harris claims they're both relieved. JENNFER ANISTON's boyfriend, Justin Theroux, moves in. SELENA GOMEZ blames an overload of junk food for her hospitalization. EMMA WATSON,who recently complained about guys not approaching her, has reportedly fallen for her ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower' co-star Johnny Simmons. SEAN PENN has been spotted with Garcelle Beauvais. JURASSIC PARK 4? Possibly... SAD SAD CONVERSATION: Comedians, actors and musicians, just talkin' on the Tube. 30 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW about Raiders of the Lost Ark. I knew almost all of them... but I am a tremendous nerd. AL QAEDA has appointed Ayman al Zawahiri, the longtime deputy of Osama bin Laden, as the official leader of the terror group. IRAN plans to send a live monkey into space later this summer. PAKISTAN: On the outskirts of Islamabad lives a militant considered so powerful that Osama bin Laden consulted with him before issuing a fatwa to attack American interests. A LIONESS tries to eat a toddler at the zoo. AN ALLIGATOR decided to make use of a community swimming pool Wednesday afternoon. Tampa police moved it to a nearby pond. A pool or a pond... a pond would be good for you. SNAKES... Why did it have to be snakes? An Idaho family was driven from their home and into bankruptcy by "hundreds and hundreds" of snakes that slithered inside the walls as they slept and left them and their children terrified. AN AFRICAN PUFF ADER has downsides as a pet. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT: A deer with four antlers... and growing.

New Releases, Jill Scott, Steve Earle & Will Scheff, Steve Miller, Go-Gos, Puppy |

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
BELLE & SEBASTIAN drop a video for "Come On Sister" from Write About Love. NEW RELEASES from Vetiver, Dananananackroyd, Marissa Nadler, Woods and more, plus McCartney reissues and the fifth Neil Young Archives release are streaming via Spinner this week. THE GO-GOS talk to All Things Considered about the 30th anniversary of Beauty and the Beat, which makes "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat" a natural for Twofer Tuesday. A HISTORY OF ROCK MUSIC is rolling out from The Guardian and The Observer, including an interactive timeline, a playlist, 50 key events and more. BON IVER: Justin Vernon gives a meaty interview to Pitchfork about songwriting, relationships, and more... GLASVEGAS: Glaswegan James Allan talks about living and recording in L.A. CLARENCE CLEMONS is reportedly in stable condition after two brain surgeries, but may be paralyzed on the left side of his body following a stroke. CHARLIE SHEEN is negotiating a "big offer" for a new TV series that could debut as early as January, 2012... according to sources close to Sheen, fwiw. LINDSAY LOHAN suffered through day 18 of her house arrest by having a bunch of friends over to her kick-ass Venice apartment for a rooftop BBQ. Meanwhile, the photog who sued her clothing line is asking a court to make Li-Lo pay up. CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS: Werner Herzog's documentary of France's Chauvet Cave, which contains the oldest known paleolithic cave drawings, but remains unseen by the public, was not as personally compelling as, say, Grizzly Man, but fascinating in its own way. Herzog goes beyoind the cave to show how scientists are studying and learning from this unique find, and even looks at how other forms of art emerged from homo sapiens during the same period. The 3-D presentation, which was undoubtedly dificult given the restrictions on filming in the cave (Herzog was his own lighting man, using special cool lights) decidedly adds to the experience, giving a better idea of how primitive man used the walls as a unique canvas to enhance their efforts, and drawing the viewer in among the stalagtites, many of which have calcified with that sparkling, dripping wax look. SUPER 8: JJ Abrams directs an homage to classic Spielberg for Spielberg, and the results are sufficiently Spielbergian, with just a dash of Abrams' own Cloverfield (but without the shakycam). As such it also tends to have the weakness of some of Spielberg's later blockbusters, i.e., the occasional feeling that it is as constructed as a carnival attraction. But there's more than enough humanity from the young cast to compensate, and the sci-fi really serves more as a device for their journey, in much the way that E.T. is really a film about the children of divorce. It's a tribute to Abrams and Co that something this meta remains affecting. KIM KARDASHIAN's lawyers are drafting a defamation complaint against NFLer Bret Lockett, who already has his backpedal in motion. ANGELINA JOLIE goes without makeup and shoes for Louis Vuitton's "Core Values" campaign. EMMA WATSON is a little more fancy for Vogue. DEMI LOVATO gets more bad news: her mom was admitted to rehab and the star has now split from boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. MARK ZUCKERBERG may be updating his Facebook status to married. NORTH KOREA may have developed a nuclear warhead small enough to be loaded onto a ballistic missile, the South Korean defense minister said, warning that risk of another "surprise provocation" by the Stalinist regime was now rising. AFGHANISTAN: While women have gained back basic rights in education, voting and work, considered un-Islamic by the Taliban, their plight remains severe and future uncertain as Afghan leaders seek to negotiate with the Taliban as part of their peace talks. TINY PUPPY, Big Leap. HUNDREDS OF FLAMINGOS are dying of electrocution daily as they fly into high-voltage electricity cables passing over their habitat on the outskirts of Bhavnagar city. LION FIGHTING: Well, that's one idea for boosting tourism to Egypt. (Another might be not turning the govt over to extremists.) ANIMALS Dressed As Other Animals.
