THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with THE BEATLES AT BUDOKAN! With all of the hoopla surrounding the Fabs' new box of remasters (including The Guardian's chart list of singles and albums and word and phrase breakdown, as well as Popdose's album-by-album review), it seemed like an opportune moment to revisit the lads in a judo arena. In June-July of 1966, the lovable moptops became the first musical group to perform at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, which engendered complaints from the older generations who considered it near-sacred ground. Consequently, the security for the trip was extensive; police stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the road from the airport to the hotel.  They performed five times in three days to audiences of about 10000 per performance. Oft-bootlegged, this is their show from June 30th --  Part 1 includes "Rock & Roll Music," "She's A Woman" and "If I Needed Someone."  Part 2 includes "Day Tripper," "Baby's In Black" and "I Feel Fine."  Part 3 includes "Yesterday," "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Nowhere Man." Part 4 concludes with "Paperback Writer" and "I'm Down."

KITTY DAISY and LEWIS stopped by the World Cafe for a chat and mini-set that is wrongly labeled rockabilly (heck, one number is ska).

ALELA DIANE talks to The Guardian about touring with her Dad as backup. Her next project is an EP with Alina Hardin; you can stream a track online.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS: Patterson Hood talks to the Florence Times Daily about the upcoming Drive-By Truckers LP, and "The Fine Print," a rarities collection. (Thx LHB.) Captain's Dead is streaming Southern Rock Opera live from 2002.

THE BEST WORST VOICES in INDIE ROCK, according to Paste, with embedded audio.

THE 24 BEST VIDEOS THAT DIDN'T WIN A MOONMAN: This year the MTV Video Music Awards will include one for "Best Video (That Shouda Won a Moonman)" -- the nominees can be seen at the link.  My inner music geek says The Replacements' "Bast^rds of Young" should be on that list, while my innder dude says Aerosmith's "Crazy" should be there. But even within the myopic vision of MTV, how did Britney's "Baby... One More Time" end up empty-handed?

BIG STAR drummer Jody Stephens talks to Spinner about compiling the box set due next Tuesday.

THE TOP 100 ALBUMS of the 2000s, according to Complex. Lotsa clicking involved.

BILLY CORGAN has started EverythingFromHereToThere, "a collective of thoughts about spirituality and the greater good of life in general."

THE CUTOUT BIN: It's a raft of classics this week from Nick Lowe, the Undertones, Big Star, the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, Mission of Burma, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, plus a big 80s hunk  -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include Whiteout, currently scoring zero percent on the ol' Tomatometer; the remade Sorority Row, currently scoring 56 percent; and Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which was not screened for critics (as usual).  The animated 9 opened Wednesday, and is scoring 60 percent.

ELLEN DeGENERES is taking Paula Abdul's place as the fourth judge on American Idol.

HUGH HEFNER finally files for divorce. Shocka!

ASHLEE SIMPSON rubs Jessica's nose in it.

JOHN MAYER denies Kristin Cavallari rumors.

WHIP IT: Cinema Blend has four new clips from the roller derby pic starring Ellen Page and (director) Drew Barrymore.

DC ENTERTAINMENT: After years of lagging rival Marvel Entertainment in adapting comic-book properties for the big screen and other media, Warner Bros. unveiled a major restructuring of its DC Comics unit Wednesday that will bring its operations under tighter control.

BARRY MANILOW's catalog will support a new rom-com in development by Tom Hanks and Michael Stipe.

CHARLIE SHEEN wants to meet with Pres. Obama to discuss his 9/11 conspiracy theory. Unlikely.

9/11: The first five minutes of CNN coverage. I came out of the shower, saw the second plane hit on NBC, and knew had had to contact my boss, whose daughter lived in NYC. Only 9 of 17 nations surveyed last year had a majority who think Al Qaeda was responsible for the attacks.

AL QAEDA is under heavy pressure in its strongholds in Pakistan's remote tribal areas and is finding it difficult to attract recruits or carry out spectacular operations in western countries, according to government and independent experts monitoring the organization.

IRAN: Legendary NYC prosecutor Robert Morgenthau notes that Ahmadinejad and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez have created a cozy financial, political and military partnership rooted in a shared anti-American animus. Morgenthau claims that over the past three years a number of Iranian-owned and controlled factories have sprung up in remote and undeveloped parts of Venezuela-ideal locations for the illicit production of weapons. Meanwhile Israeli PM Netanyahu may have made a secret trip to Russia to discuss Iran's nuclear threat -- though Russian press reports should be taken with at least a grain of salt.

SURPRISE CAT DANCE: Let's go to the video.

FAT CAT: A Chinese man believes his two-and-a-half stone cat could be the heaviest in the world.

CARRIER PIGEONS are being used to transfer data between offices because bosses believe it is quicker than broadband.

UNDERWEAR-STEALING MONKEYS defeated by cactus.

INRGID MICHAELSON? "Maybe."

NEW RELEASES: Yo La Tengo, Polvo, Sondre lerche, Os Mutantes, Phish, A Fine Frenzy, and more are streaming this week via Spinner. Taken by Trees may still be streaming via NPR (if not, try Drowned In Sound).

BIG STAR is advance streaming the first disc from their upcoming box set, including demos and alternate takes on their classics.

SONDRE LERCHE played the World Cafe on Friday; you can stream the gig on demand via NPR.

DALE WATSON did the four free songs thing for Daytrotter, all taken from Truckin' Sessions: Volume Two.

EARTH, WIND and FIRE: Because it's "September."

THE RAVEONETTES offered an exclusive advance track, "Last Dance," to stream or download at EW. And it's pretty awesome.

THE SIX PILLARS OF SOUTHERN ROCK, according to the Arizona Republic, with embedded audio.

JOHN LENNON: The lost interviews, uncovered by the Times of London.

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD. is reuniting for a UK tour in December, to mark the 30th anniversary of their second album, Metal Box.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Final Destination repeats at No.1, making 15.4 million over the long weekend and clearing a path to be the biggest grosser of the franchise. Inglourious Basterds held a close second with 15 million as it closes in on 100 million domestic, making all concerned smile.  All About Steve debuted in third with 14 million, despite Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper in the leads. Indeed, the trajectory over the course of the weekend points to this one tanking quickly.  Gamer debuted in fourth place with 11.2 million, which is good only because of its meager 12 million budget.  District 9 rounded out the Top Five with a 9 million take that pushed it over the 100 million mark domestically.

EXTRACT, the latest comedy from Mike Judge, debuted in tenth which is too bad.  I cannot say that it was as funny as Office Space or Idiocracy, but it deserved a better marketing campaign, and a better fate, than this.  Jason Bateman was as good as always, and Ben Affleck was actually intentionally funny.  Mila Kunis was also as charming as called for, though we could always use more of her.

TILA TEQUILA was hospitalized early Sunday following an altercation with her San Diego Chargers boyfriend, Shawne Merriman.  The linebacker was arrested and accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, but Merriman suggests he was trying to stop her from leaving because she was intoxicated.

MATT DAMON enjoyed packing on the pounds for his role in The Informant.

LINDSAY LOHAN and her underaged sister Ali were spotted clubbing with Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, I Love You, Man).

AMY WINEHOUSE and ex husband Blake Fielder-Civil are back together, according to the uber-reliable News of the World.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL grew up believing her sister Emily was from the planet Neptune? That's one among many observations in an interview with the Daily Mail.

DOG PLAYING POOL: Let's go to the video.

PYTHON in a TOILET: Twice the size of a man.

SCOOTER, claimed to be the smallest dog in the world, died after reacting badly to medication following a broken leg.

DOG and CHEETAH, joyriding together... mass hysteria!

JUST WHEN YOU THUOUGHT IT WAS SAFE: Swimming was prohibited at all Atlantic beaches in the picturesque Cape Cod town of Chatham for the remainder of Labor Day weekend after several great white sharks were seen off the coast. What say you, Police Chief Brody?

THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with MOTOWN MADNESS! There's so much from which to choose, but let's start with a Martha Reeves and the Vandellas trifecta of "Heat Wave" (on RSG!) "Nowhere to Run" and "Dancing in the Street." Chase that with a string of Temptations classics, including "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg,"  "(I Know) I'm Losing You," "Psychedelic Shack," and "Ball of Confusion." The Supremes bring "Back in My Arms Again," "Where Did Our Love Go" and a live trifecta of "Baby Love," "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" and "Let Me Go the Right Way." The Four Tops lip-synch through "It's the Same Old Song" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" on Shindig, "Something About You" on Hullaballoo and "Baby, I Need Yor Loving" on Shivaree.  The Marvelettes  ask "Please Mr. Postman." Marvin Gaye proclaims "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved by You" and duets with Tammi Terrell on "Ain't no Mountain High Enough," though I'll throw it over to Gladys Knight and the Pips for "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." I'll close with a trifecta from Smokey Robinson and the Miracles -- "The Tracks of My Tears," "You Really Got a Hold on Me" and "Tears of a Clown."

CHIP TAYLOR, author of songs such as "Wild Thing," "Angel of the Morning" and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)," stopped by WFUV for a session based on Songs from a Dutch Tour, his book and CD that acts as an audioobiography.

JASON LYTLE (formerly of Granddaddy) played the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on July 11, but you can stream the gig now via NPR.

THE BEACH BOYS: Aquarium Drunkard has re-posted a 1967 rehearsal session for stream or download, including a cover of "The Letter."

THE PARTY'S OVER? Summer is not over until my friends get my Summer mix (next week, knock on wood), but NPR has songs for Summer's end, including one of my all-time Summer songs from The Ramones.

THE RASCALS cover Smokey Robinson's "Mickey's Monkey," so I guess I wasn't quite done with the Motown thing.

JACK WHITE and KEITH RICHARDS: What could go wrong?

JEFF TWEEDY talks to Maxim, so we have something to back up the claim that we read it for the articles.

THE FLAMING LIPS: Wayne Coyne talks to Paste about the open-ended production of the new album, how Barack Obama lets the Flaming Lips make better music and why the legalization of marijuana just makes sense.

CHARLIE LOVIN anseres the infamous 20 Questions for PopMatters.

CUTOUT BIN: From Yo La Tengo to the Youngbloods, from Devo to Led Zeppelin, from the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band to the Buzzcocks, plus the Kinks, Television, REM, Rachel Sweet, Grizzly Bear with Michael McDonald and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are Gamer, which was not screened for critics; All About Steve, currently scoring zero percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and the Mike Judge comedy Extract, scoring 58 percent.

LISA LOEB is knocked up.

KATHERINE HEIGL is taking a five-episode hiatus from Grey's Anatomy shoot the rom-com Life as We Know It.

MICHAEL JACKSON's burial finally took place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA yesterday. TMZ has detrails about the after-party.

MADONNA collapsed twice onstage in Sofia, Bulgaria.

100 YEARS OF VISUAL EFFECTS, courtesy of College Humor. It leaves out three major milestones -- "2001," "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" -- but a cool montage, nonetheless.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE director Spike Jonze gets a meaty profile in the New York Times magazine.  He's the one without a wolf suit.

TONY ROMO is dating Chace Crawford's little sister, Candice, a 22-year-old former beauty queen. Shocka.

OUR FRIENDS, THE SAUDIS' list of 85 most wanted suspects being sought abroad has been reduced to just 80 suspects.

PAKISTAN: The Taliban has taken control of telephone exchange in South Waziristan, suspending the agency communication with whole world.

AFGHANISTAN: Two devastating suicide attacks in Afghanistan in the fortnight since elections show the Taliban is penetrating ever deeper in its war against the Kabul government and its international backers. Cultivation of opium, the nation's most lucrative cash crop and a major funding source for the Taliban, has fallen sharply this year in large part because an excess supply of the drug has pushed down prices to a 10-year low.

KITTEH HIJINKS: Let's go to the video.

LIONS and TIGERS and BEARS: Oh my!

GIANT DOG and PIGLET, nursing together...

WHEN OTTERS ATTACK: A 49-year-old triathlete about 275 km west of Calgary was training in an area lake for an upcoming Ironman competition when he had the surprise of his life.

DOGS grocery shop in China.

CHIHUAHUA SNATCHERS: Is there anything lower?

THE WALRUS IS DEAD, MAN: Miss him, miss him.
