JONATHAN DEMME, the Oscar-winning filmmaker who directed films including Melvin and Howard, Something Wild, The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, not to mention rockumentaries like Stop Making Sense, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, and Storefront Hitchcock, died on Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 73.  The tributes poured infrom the worlds of film and music, including collaborator David Byrne. BONUS: Five music videos Demme directed.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Fate of the Furious repeats atop the chart with 38.7MM, even with a 61 percent drop on a slow weekend.  That drop is marginally better than the last couple of installments of the franchise, though holidays and the death of Paul Walker may have accounted for those larger drops. Yuge overseas grosses bring the worldwide total to over 900MM is just 2 weekends.  The Boss Baby places again with 12.8MM on a leggy 20 percent drop.  Beauty and the Beast again shows with 10MM on a 27 percent drop.  The debut of Born in China takes the fourth slot with 5.1MM.  The Going In Style remake rounds out the Top Five with 5MM on a slight bounce that could make the difference between profit and loss in theaters.  All the rest of the new releases opened below the fold.  I have to say this old article in The New Yorker has me interested in The Lost City of Z.
