Monday, August 12, 2019 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
PILOT works their "Magic" on TOTP. NEW RELEASES from Markika Hackman, Ra Ra Riot, Hammered Hulls and more are streaming now. STEVE EARLE visits The Current for a 7-song set. BRUCE HORNSBY also visits The Current. WEYES BLOOD covers Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” at Outside Lands. DAVID BERMAN's death was ruled a suicide, which I sort of assumed. He's remembered by Wooden Wand's James Toth and Beauty Pill's Chad Clark. CRAIG FINN shares 10 of the most formative albums on his record shelves. AMERICAN ANTHEM essays The Impressions' “We’re a Winner.” THE NUMBER ONES looks at Neil Sedaka's bitter-tongued Elton John duet, "Bad Blood."
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw repeats atop the chart with 25.4MM on a 58 percent drop. That's not great, but it crosses 100MM and 332MM worldwide, which means it may do well enough to turn the spin-off into its own mini-franchise. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark places with 20.8MM against a reported 28MM budget, a solid debut tho that budget is a tad pricey. The remade Lion King shows with another 20MM on a 48 percent drop and has over 1.34 billion worldwide. Dora and the Lost City of Gold debuts in the fourth slot with 17MM against a 49MM budget, suggesting Hollywood sat on this idea for years too long. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood rounds out the Top Five with 11.6MM and crosses 100MM in North America. Below the fold, both The Art of Racing in the Rain and The Kitchen open disappointingly. MILEY CRUS & LIAM HEMSWORTH have separated. This is my shocked face. JEFFREY EPSTEIN, the financier indicted on sex trafficking charges, committed suicide in his jail cell. GWYNETH PALTROW didn't know SAMUEL L. JACKSON was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her. DENISE RICHARDS reveals her dad's reaction to Charlie Sheen's hooker on Thanksgiving. HARVEY WEISTEIN is barred from traveling to Europe. JOAQUIN PHOENIX already has an award nomination for Joker. LADY GAGA plans to fund classrooms in Gilroy, El Paso, and Dayton following mass shootings in these cities. THE HUNT has been scrapped (for now) in the wake of mass shootings and complaints from President Trump supporters. OWLS discover and immediately get rid of a hidden camera which tracks their movements. A WILD WHITE ARCTIC FOX, captured on camera in Greenland. MacARTHUR PARK? Somebody fell asleep in the rain. A YELLOWSTONE VISITOR was caught petting a bison on video.
