WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Jurassic World repeats atop the chart with 102MM on a 51 percent drop.  It will break the 400MM mark domestically tomorrow, and likely 450MM by the weekend; only four other films have made that much.  It will also break a billion worldwide in that time.  Pixar's Inside Out places with 91MM, but that's some second place!  Analysts thought this would open somewhere around 60-65M; but near-unanimous good reviews and an "A" Cinemascore made this movie the biggest ever to not open at number one. Spy showed with 10.5MM on the leggy 33 percent drop one hopes to see from a comedy; it should make the extra 50MM it needs to profit on the big screen.  San Andreas takes the fourth spot wit h8.2MM on a 24 percent drop, after taking a beating from Jurassic World's debut.  The Rock will surely profit before the home market.  The debut of Dope rounds out the Top 5 with 6MM, a bit less than the 8-10MM tracking numbers.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE...

...with the wicked, wicked WILSON PICKETT, live from Germany, circa 1968. This disappeared from the Tube, but I've managed to find almost all of it reposted there or elsewhere.  His band warms up the crowd with the instrumental "Soulfinger," but Pickett electrifies from the moment he enters for "Everybody Needs Somebody" and doesn't let up through "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)," "Mustang Sally" and "Stagger Lee." He takes it down just a half-notch for "I'm In Love" before cranking it back into top gear for "Funky Broadway," during which people dancing in front of the stage start turning up onstage (And why not? This rawks almost as hard as The Who's cover of "Shakin' All Over").  The tumultuous finale of "Land of 1000 Dances" from amid the crowd remains missing, but this other "Land of 1000 Dances" from 1966 is almost as wild, and in color to boot. Raw and riveting; if this can't put you in a weekend state of mind, probably nothing can

HEARTLESS BAST^RDS played a mini-set at Philadelphia's Non-COMMvention.

TELEKINESIS performed an all-acoustic solo set on KEXP

FFS stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session.

HOP ALONG performed live at KEXP’s "Hood-to-Hood 2015: West Seattle Day."

CLEARANCE drops “You’ve Been Pre-Approved" ahead of Rapid Rewards.

FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE play "It Must Be Summer" unpluggedy.

PAVEMENT: Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs talk to Pitchfork about the band's upcoming rarities compilations.

NICK CAVE is mounting a seven-month-long art project in Detroit.

BON IVER criticizes Apple Music's streaming service and praises Spotify

GENE WEEN talks to Stereogum about his Billy Joel tribute band.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include Pixar's Inside Out, which is currently scoring 99 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Dope, currently scoring 91 percent.

INSIDE OUT is Pixar's best film since Toy Story 3. It has some great jokes and is as wildly inventive as the mind of an 11-year-old (where most of the movie is set). The animation is gorgeous, per usual. It has a rather sophisticated moral for a family film (indeed, one that might affect its box office).  And yet it does not rank with the Toy Story franchise, or The Incredibles, Up, Finding Nemo or Monsters, Inc. (which shares a director, Pete Docter). Why? Because of the inherent limits of the movie's concept.  When most of your characters are emotions, it is difficult for them to express character beyong their respective base emotions without straining the suspension of disbelief.  It is a tribute to Docter and the voice talent that they succeed as often as they do at it.

BRIAN WILLIAMS and NBC have come to a tentative agreement that will keep Williams at the network after his six-month suspension ends in August. His portfolio will include a position on MSNBC, where there's apparently less concern with credibility. I'm sure the folks at MSNBC love Comcast for this.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER pranks people for charity.

SANDRA BULLOCK ruined Michael Oher's football career.

KUNG FU PANDA 3 dropped its first trailer online.

CHINA: The massive hack of US federal employee and military data at OPM happened in part because the data was not encrypted and some IT contractors were located in the People's Republic of China.

IRAQ: At a Congressional hearing focused on the strategy for Iraq, the Pentagon conceded that the hope for a multi-sectarian, unified Iraq is becoming a less likely outcome. More likely, they said, is a three-way split of the country.
