WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Shrek Forever After threepeats as the champ with 25.3 million, in a weekend that shows both the level of disarray among the competition and the power of holding 3-D screens at your local cineplex.  Get Him to The Greek places with a 17.4 million debut against a 40 million budget, which likely makes it another repeat of the successful Apatow production formula (keep the budget down).  It will likely finish somewhere around 100 million, about twice as much as the total for Apatow's more costly Funny People.  OTOH, Killers shows with a 16.1 million debut against a 75 million budget -- and that was at the low end of projections.  Ashton Kutcher's last two projects went straight to DVD, but this one cost too much. Good thing Lionsgate sold the foreign rights to cut their exposure.  Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time drops a notch -- and 54 percent -- to the fourth slot, with 13.9 million. Overseas receipts will have to save this 200-million price tag.  Sex & the City 2 plummeted 59 percent to the bottom of the Top 5 with 12.7 million; it has made 73.4 million, but the original had broken the 100 million mark at this point in its run.  Below the fold, Marmaduke's 6th place, 11.3 million opening (against a 50 million budget) helps explain why Shrek remains at the top, while Splice about as disappointingly in eigth place with about 7.5 million against a 30 million budget.

It's 21 percent drop looks good until you look at the 39 percent drop it took over the normal three-day gross.  Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time debuts at No. 2 with 37.8 million -- not an especially promising start for what Jerry Bruckheimer hoped would be a franchise.  Its reported 200 million budget is likely on the low side, and even after international receipts come in, this one may have to hope DVD bucks bail it out.  Sex & The City 2 slid from second to third over the course of the weekend with 37.1 million; including its Thursday opening, its 45 million total still looks kinda anemic against a 100 million budget. (The original opened with 57 million on a smaller budget. Ouch.)  Iron Man 2 drops to No.4 with another 20.6 million, benefiting from the weak competition.  StarkExpo 2010 has raked in 279 million domestically.  Robin Hood rounds out the Top 5 with 13.6 million, but has taken in only 86.3 million domestic against a 200 million budget.  Fortunately for Crowe and his Not-So-Merry Men, the flick has taken in 154.6 million overseas.
