WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Resident Evil: Retribution tops your chart with 21.1 million, right about where this franchise does... and against a relatively light 65 million budget, there will almost undoubtedly be more zombies to come. Despite selling relatively fewer tickets for this installment domestically, this flick took in another 50 million worldwide and may well top 300 million by the end of its run.  The 3-D rerelease of Finding Nemo places with 17.5 million, just about on par with the 3-D Beauty and the Beast, more easy money for the Mouse.  The Possession shows with 5.8 million on a 38 percent drop in a quite leggy showing for a horror flick.  Lawless drops to the fourth slot with 4.2 million on a mere 30 perscent drop, which should remind us of just how bad last weekend was. ParaNorman rounds out the Top 5 with 3 million on a 28 percent drop, continuing to underperform Coraline (although in fairness, Coraline had a fan base from the book).

KATE MIDDLETON: Lawyers for Britain's royal family will make a criminal complaint against the photographer who took pictures of Prince William's wife Kate sunbathing topless in the south of France, William's office said Sunday.

AMANDA BYNES came one step closer to disaster Thursday night when she was driving around West Hollywood — on a suspended license — and got into an accident ... though, luckily, it was minor.  Does she have serious mental issues?

EVA LONGORIA & MARK SANCHEZ: Officially an item.

BEN AFFLECK talks to Details about Argo and the enternal struggle to balance work and family.

RUPERT EVERETT, who blazed a trail for gay actors when he came out as homosexual 20 years ago, has spoken out against gay parents and said he “can't think of anything worse” than two men bringing up a child together.

THE UNITED STATES pulled nonessential staff from its diplomatic facilities in Sudan and Tunisia. Abel Daoud was arrested in an FBI sting operation and charged with trying to detonate a bomb in a downtown Chicago bar. In Virginia, Amine el Khalifi was sentenced to 30 years in prison for plotting to bomb the US Capitol.

EGYPT: Protests in Cairo subsided as hundreds of riot police cleared the area around the US embassy. Security forces arrested 220 "troublemakers and lawbreakers" and jailed 54 for prosecution. Barriers were erected to seal off the area.

LIBYA: Security forces identified 50 individuals involved in the attack on the US embassy. Four have been arrested; others may have escaped. The US sent spies, Marines, and drones to Libya to speed the investigation. Al Qaeda said the attack was revenge for the killing of its second in command, Abu Yahya al Libi.

THE 25 BEST SEINFELD EPISODES? Paste courts controversy, as listicles strive to do.

TEN THINGS You Probably Didn't Know About Star Trek.

IRAN: The UN's nuclear agency censured Iran over its nuclear program. Oil exports were down dramatically due to international sanctions. The US and allies prepared for a major naval exercise in the Persian Gulf.

SYRIA: Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri called on all Muslims to support rebels fighting to overthrow the Assad regime. Heavy fighting continued throughout the country. In Damascus, a pro-Assad Shi'ite militia battled with rebels.

YEMEN: Protesters stormed the US embassy in Sana'a, tore down the US flag, and chanted "death to America" and "death to Israel." Yemen security forces did not prevent protesters from entering the embassy.

LIBYA: Four suspects believed to be involved in the attack on the US consulate were arrested by Libyan authorities. The US Navy deployed two destroyers to the Libyan coast. There is growing belief that the attack was in revenge for the killing in a drone strike in Pakistan of Mohammed Hassan Qaed, an al-Qaeda operative who was, as his nom-de-guerre Abu Yahya al-Libi suggests, from Libya, and timed for the anniversary of the 11 September attacks. Moreover, according to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Dept had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted. The US Director of National Intelligence, responded to that report: “This is absolutely wrong. We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent.” There are at least five problems with that very carefully worded response. First, a report about planned attacks was published Tuesday morning by Egypt’s Al-Masry al-Youm daily, based on Egyptian intell; if that intell wasn't shared, more questions are raised.  Second, an officer at the consulate told his online gaming friends at the outset of the siege he might die (as he did hours later) and had seen one of Libyan ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures.  Third, the ambush of the rescuers appeared professionally executed. Fourth, no mob gathered outside the US Embassy in Tripoli, the usual base of Chris Stevens, the late ambassador which, on the face of it, would have been a more logical target.  Fifth, when US sources told CNN "this was a clearly planned military-type attack," the response from another US official was that there was "no clear stream of intelligence that indicated the Benghazi attack was coming."  There seems to be plenty of evidence the attack was premeditated; whether the US had intelligence about it (and if so, how much) is the subject of further review.

EGYPT: Protests outside the US embassy turned violent. Protesters threw Molotov cocktails while police responded with tear gas. Pres Morsi said he backed peaceful protest but not attacks on embassies. US officials semi-denied reports that the Marines at the embassy were barred from carrying live ammunition (the language of the "denials" is carefully worded). Morsi attempted to persuade Iran to drop its support of the Assad regime in Syria.

SUPER-KITTENS fly to dubstep.

A NEW MONKEY was discovered living in the remote forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MONGO: Lancaster, AP, police said they arrested a man after he punched a mounted officer and his horse.

A RABID BEAVER leaped out of a pond and chased children at a Springfield nature center.

SYRIA: The United Nations says the number of refugees who have fled Syria has reached more than 250K calling the humanitarian problems sparked by the conflict "our biggest crisis."

EGYPT: A proposal by Salafis to give Egypt's main Islamic institution the final say on whether the law of the land adheres to Islamic laws threatens to bring the already painfully slow process of drafting the new constitution to a grinding halt. Riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets late Wednesday outside the US Embassy in Cairo to keep protesters away from the building's perimeter. Although Egypt's prime minister called Tuesday's incident "regrettable" and unjustified, Pres Mohamed Morsi condemned the anti-Muslim film that incited the protesters. One hitch: this was never really about the movie, which may not even exist. The "protest" was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman, who is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

LIBYA: The consulate where the American ambassador to Libya was killed on Tuesday is an "interim facility" not protected by the contingent of Marines that safeguards embassies.  US sources say they do not believe the attacks that killed Amb. Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya, were in reaction to the online release of a film mocking Islam, reports CNN. A squad of US troops despatched by helicopter across the Libyan desert to rescue besieged diplomats from Benghazi on Wednesday ran into a fierce overnight ambush that left a further two Americans dead, Libyan officials told Reuters.

YEMEN: "Now, the war against al-Qaeda is more dangerous than before."

EGYPT: Thousands of Egyptian demonstrators tore down the Stars and Stripes at the US embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and replaced it with an Islamic flag on the annniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Hardline Islamist supporters of the Salafist movement gathered at the embassy in protest over a film deemed offensive to the Prophet Mohammed which was produced by expatriate members of Egypt's Christian minority resident in the United States. And the US embassy sided against (admittedly crude) free speech and with the Islamists.  Hours and hours later, the White House disavowed the embassy statement...anonymously.  And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke out by name.

LIBYA? Same thing. An armed mob protesting over a film they said offended Islam, attacked the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Tuesday and set fire to the building, witnesses reported. A US official has been killed and others wounded.  This is why the US was throwing free speech under the bus in Cairo; just trying to keep the daeth toll down. Maybe a smart short-term move, but medium-term...
