M WARD and OKKERVIL RIVER were on Austin City Limits, which has interview clips, plus performances of "Never Had Nobody Like You" and "Unless It's Kicks."

THE ANTLERS did the four free songs thing for Daytrotter.

YEASAYER has released a new single, "Ambling Alp," from the band's 2010 release Odd Blood.

MIKE DOUGHTY played the World Cafe on Friday; you can stream the gig on demand via NPR.  He also talks to the Village Voice about Twitter, why Dave Matthews deserves a bit of respect, and why the world can withstand another memoir about drugs.

SUFJAN STEVENS gets an interview, tracks and video about The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway via NPR's Morning Edition.

LOS FABULOSOS CADILLACS perform "Vamos Ya," a/k/a Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up." (Thx, Soul-Sides.)

JOHN LYDON, a/k/a Johnny Rotten, surveys the soundtrack of his life at The Observer.

ROGER McGUINN: The former Byrd tells Spinner he didn't want to be in a band with David Crosby in the first place.

INDIE ROCK is killing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

HEY, JUDE, don't make it a flowchart.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Michael Jackson's This Is It was a semi-thriller with 21.3 million, not bad considering that having Halloween fall on a Saturday is box office poison. But Jacko did not top the receipts for the Hanna Montana concert movie, which had a much lower budget than the 60 million Sony paid for This Is It.  But 101 million so far in global sales, the soundtrack, and the DVD is paying nicely for Sony.  Paranormal Activity dropped a modest 22 percent to the second slot, jacking its total to 84.8 million.  Law Abiding Citizen took in 7.3 million, and has now made back its 50 million production budget. Couple Retreat made 6.1 million for a total of 86.6 million against a70 million budget.  Saw VI rounded out the Top Five with 5.6 million, for a 61 percent drop and a mere 22 million total (good thing Lionsgate kept the budget down to 11 million).  Below the fold, Where The Wild Things Are came in sixth, but on another big drop that makes 80 million an optimistic total.  Astro Boy also looks like a big flop.  Amelia and The Vampire's Assistant also look like flobs, though with smaller budgets.

RYAN SEACREST's kinfe-wielding alleged stalker was busted on the E! campus.

NICOLE RICHIE got restraining orders against two paparazzi.

NICOLAS CAGE owes 6.3 million in back taxes and is deep in money troubles.

ANNA NICOLE SMITH IS STILL DEAD, but her boyfriend and two doctors will stand trial on charges of fueling her addiction to prescription drugs.

COLIN FARRELL is a dad again.

PAM ANDERSON: Not knocked up.

CHRISOPHER WALKEN gives a dramatic reading of Lady GaGa's "Poker Face."  Pretty awesome, though I could've used a little cowbell.

DAKOTA FANNING: A real-life homecoming princess.

JUDE LAW and SIENNA MILLER reunion rumor denied.

DENNIS HOPPER has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

IRAN: Frustrated by Iran's continued defiance of demands to come clean on its nuclear program, the Obama administration is leaning toward imposing new sanctions, even if it must act alone.  And a year ago, that policy would have been called "unilateral" or "cowboy," with a lot of discussion about how sanctions are easily avoided unless enforced by all.

AFGHANISTAN: Presidential challenger Abdullah Abdullah stepped aside on Sunday, leaving the field clear for Pres. Karzai to serve another five-year term but challenging the legitimacy of the government in an emotional speech before thousands of opposition supporters.  A new initiative to persuade low- and mid-level Afghan insurgents to lay down their weapons and rejoin society is already bearing fruit and holds great promise for the future, say senior officials in the NATO coalition.

IRAQ: As Iraqi officials work to assign blame for the deadly attacks on the heart of the government on Sunday, concern is rising that a greater security threat may come from within the system in the form of corruption, from the top leadership of ministries down to soldiers who man checkpoints.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST GATHERING OF FRUIT BATS: Should've had this before Halloween. My bad.

A GATOR escaped from show and tell Friday at a Panama City Beach, FL school, ending with the critter on the loose in the woods near Pier Park.

TIPSY the HEDGEHOG was found rolling around an orchard after getting drunk by gorging on fermented apples.

COYOTES are proliferating in North American cities -- but still less dangerous than pitbulls (for now).

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...STREAMING FROM THE CASTLE EAST! This fan-made 1973 video for "The Monster Mash" is today's must-see clip (natch), though you can also see Bobby "Boris" Pickett perform it live at Little Steven's Halloween a Go-Go 2005. The covers by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and The Misfits are pretty good also -- the latter uses clips from the Rankin-Bass animated classic, Mad Monster Party.

THE SHAGGS: It's Halloween!

JIM CARROLL, who recently died, sings about "People Who Died."

BEST AND WORST SONGS ABOUT DEATH, according to ClashMusic.

THE TEN BEST HALLOWEEN SONGS, with embedded audio, according to the AOL Radio Blog.  (There's also a click-through to AOL's Halloween radio channel.)

GHOSTS IN THE MACHINE: A haunted mix, spanning the genres, via NPR.

HALLOWEEN A/V: PopMatters' streaming Halloween videos and audio, from Bauhaus to Tegan & Sara to Stevie Wonder to AC/DC to Cream... has taken some hits from the lawyers since last year, including the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer,"  Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising," and Santana's "Black Magic Woman."  But my fave may still be Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

WARREN ZEVON is on that PopMatters list, but I prefer a live trifecta of "Werewolves of London," "Excitable Boy" and "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner."

ZOMBEATLES: The Fab Gore.

HENRI MANCINI: "Experiment in Terror." A sentimental favorite to those who grew up watching "Creature Features" on WGN before it went superstation.

KISS got their first television exposure in 1976 on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special.

"DO THEY KNOW IT'S HALLOWEEN?" is the all-star charity send-up of Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" featuring Roky Erikson, Elvira, plus members from Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Smoosh, Rilo Kiley, Sparks and many more.

TRICK OR TREAT BIN:  From Barenaked Ladies to Run-DMC, from Iggy Pop to the Evangelicals, from The Who to Imogene Heap, plus R.E.M., the New York Dolls, Bow Wow Wow, Alex Chilton, Van She, Devo and more  -- this Friday's Halloween-themed finds can be jukeboxed or streamed separately via the Pate page at the ol' HM.

THE TIME WARP:  Let's do it again.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's sole new wide release is Michael Jackson's This Is It, currently scoring 81 percent on the ol' Tomatometer.

"THRILLER": Speaking of the late Jacko, I'll throw in the original 13-minute classic in addition to the filipino prisoners.

MARTIN SCORSESE shares his favorite horror movies of all time. Plus, watch clips of the scariest scenes.

THE 11 BEST OLD SCHOOL HORROR TRAILERS, according to Maxim magazine. Yeah, I read it for the articles.

IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, in its entirety, Charlie Brown.  Every year, the bootleg video rises from the Internet patch.

FIVE THINGS you may not know about Halloween.

THE WOLFMAN has a new trailer online.

THE HORRIBLY SLOW MURDERER With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon. Ten minutes of unimaginable terror.

WAR of the WORLDS:  Seventy-one years later, you can stream the infamous Orson Welles broadcast from the Internet Archive.

THE WILHELM SCREAM: The repeatedly used film and television stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums, now appearing as an in-joke in many films, is the subject of a Masters of Horror segment.

31 CLASSIC HALLOWEEN TV EPISODES AND SPECIALS, according to Zap2It.

23 UNUSUAL VAMPIRE VARIATIONS, courtesy of The A.V. Club.

13 CEMETERY ROAD: Ed and Trish Leahy couldn't help but develop a tradition of decorating their yard for Halloween.

THE MOST INAPPROPRIATE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES POSSIBLE, according to the HuffPo.

END CAT: Jake receives transmissions from the future.

MYSTERY LUMP mistaken for an alien on the beach.

A DOZEN ANIMALS ELECTROCUTED in northwestern Montana, including a wolf that was "still warm" when it was found.

HALLOWEEN may not be for pets, but when has that stopped anyone?

AFGHANISTAN: The NYT reports that Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country's booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.  The Karzais fiecely deny the claim and blame it on enemies of the Afghan regime and the NYT.  True or not, it is likely believed in country, and the more interesting story may be who leaked it and why.

ROMAN POLANSKI's rape victim asked a Los Angeles court to drop the charges against the director, claiming the media attention interferes with her employment and health.  That would be a bit tricky, considering Polanski has in fact been convicted of the crime.  Her desire for closure and privacy is understandable, but the reason criminal cases are brought by "the State" or "the People" is because the system exists not merely to serve victims, but also society at large.  Private justice gets served by the civil system, where this woman has negotiated a sizable monetary settlement with Polanski -- a fact left out of this story, and almost every story about her.
