WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Ready Player One tops the chart with 41.2MM over the holiday weekend (51.2MM since Wed) against a 175MM budget.  Worldwide totals for Spielberg are 181.2MM, but figure the marketing and other P & A costs mean it likely has to clear 300-325MM as a rough guess to make a profit.  It will get a little help from the weakish calendar of releases (outside maybe Rampage) until Infinity War arrives in a few weekends.  Tyler Perry's Acrimony places with 17.1MM against a reported 20MM budget, his best non-Madea openining in years.  Black Panther shows with 11.3MM and its total will likely pass Titanic by week's end. I Can Only Imagine takes the fourth slot with 10.8MM on a leggy 21 percent drop (and 55.6MM against a 7MM budget).  Pacific Rim: Uprising, last weekend's champ, skids 67 percent to gross 9.2MM -- a viction of Spielberg (tho this sequel was always a play for Asan markets).

STEVEN BOCHCO, the strong-willed writer and producer who brought gritty realism and sprawling ensemble casts to the small screen with such iconic series as Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue, died Sunday morning. He was 74.

THE EASTER WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with THE B-52s!  Live at the Capitol Theater, circa 1980.  Your setlist includes: Lava, Give Me Back My Man, 6060-842, Devil In My Car, 52 Girls, Quiche Lorraine, Dirty Back Road, Private Idaho, Strobe Light, Runnin' Around, Rock Lobster, Dance This Mess Around, Planet Claire, Party Out Of Bounds, Downtown, and 53 Miles West Of Venus.

THE ACES advance stream When My Heart Felt Volcanic.

DR OCTOGON advance streams Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation.

PATTI SMITH plays the Mountain Stage.

BELLY shares "Stars Align."

CHVRCHES shares "Never Say Die."

MURRAY HEAD: "One Night In Bangkok." Mostly for the sheer 80s cheesiness, but also because today this is a blog with everything, including Yul Brynner.

DAVID BYRNE surveys the soundtrack of his life at Pitchfork.

ICEAGE talks to Stereogum about heir new album Beyondless and fumbling towards inspiration.

SUEDE's debut turns 25.

THE NUMBER ONES looks at Pat Boone's godawful teenage-suicide tragedy "Moody River."

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include Ready Player One, which is currently scoring 77 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; Tyler Perry's Acrimony, which was not screened for critics, and God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness, scoring 20 percent.

REN & STIMPY creator John Kricfalusi allegedly preyed on young female fans and had a 16-year-old girlfriend.

WESTWORLD dropped a Season 2 trailer.

RYAN SEACREST's accuser has filed a police report.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER may not support Cynthia Nixon's campaign for governor of New York, and her silence dooms any possibility of a third Sex and the City movie.

JUSTIN THEROUX: Moving on from Jennifer Aniston with... Aubrey Plaza?  Or ar they just old friends from Parks and Rec?

ALISON MACK: Is a Smallville alum in danger of being arrested in a sex trafficking case?

JESSICA CHASTAIN talks to Vulture about Salomé, Al Pacino, nudity and more.

WHY IS THIS SATURDAY DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER DAYS?  Because ABC has its annual showing of The Ten Commandments, a grand spectacle featuring acting from Edward G. Robinson and Anne Baxter that is so over-the-top that Yul Brynner starts to look good by comparison.  And while Robinson's Dathan never actually spoke the line "Where's your Messiah now?" in the movie, it  -- like "Play It Again, Sam" (not spoken in Casablanca) -- has become part of a part of our culture. The line actually comes from Billy Crystal, originally a bit from the Oscars, iirc. It later turned up on The Simpsons, with Chief Wiggum playing Dathan to Ned Flanders' Moses.

READY PLAYER ONE is a Steven Spielberg film adapted from a book clearly inspied byt eh peak blockbuster version of Spielberg -- and arena where Spielberg has not often played lately.  And perhaps it is all of this -- or the virtual relaity where much of the action occurs -- that gives off a slight feeling of virtual Spielberginess.  Or prehaps Spielberg is now at a place in his life where he cannot tap into that vintage Spielberg thing in exactly the same ways as decades ago. But he remains a master directo, and so even the virtual Spielberg is quite entertaining, and generally better than others who have tried to be virtual Spielberg (looking at you, J.J.).  Obviously, it's more fun the more rooted you are in the pop culture of the 80s and early 90s, but with plenty for those who are not.
