DAYTROTTER - and its iPhone app - get a shout from The New York Times.

VAN MORRISON denied that he has had a new baby, saying that a report on his official website suggesting he had was the result of a hacking.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Avatar threepeats in theaters with another 68.3 million in ticket sales, on an amazingly small 9.7 percent drop.  It broke the 350 million mark, and was the third fastest to break 300 million on Friday.  It's the biggest gross in January ever (beating Cloverfield) and the biggest third weekend ever (beating Spider-Man and The Dark Knight).  It will likely be in the all-time Top Ten a week from now.  Sherlock Holmes repeated in the second slot, with 38.4 million. The 38 percent drop is slightly trpubling, but Sherlock still has a good shot at 200 million in the US.  The Alvin and the Chipmunks squeakquel held the third slot with 36 million on a 25.1 percent drop, and broke 150 million.  The rodents may beat their first film by the end of this run.  It's Complicated came in fourth with 18.7 million on a 15.4 percent drop.  The Blind Silde held well to round out the Top Five, with 12.7 million and a 10.3 percent increase.

CHARLIE SHEEN did or did not offer to boost Brooke Mueller's pre-nup by a million.  In either event, it sounds like a small sum to a guy who makes over 800K per episode of Two and a Half Men.  Brooke reportedly wants to come back to L.A. with the kids and resume cohabiting with Charlie.

TIGER WOODS will no longer be associated with the slogan, "Reach out and touch someone."  Repets have Elin letting her hair down on New Year's Eve.

KATE HUDSON and OWEN WILSON are reportedly back in touch after her breakup with A-Rod.

SANDRA BULLOCK shined as 2009's top Hollywood star at the box office, according to US theater owners.

ELTON JOHN says he has been helping Eminen fight drug problems for more than a year.

AFGHANISTAN: On Wednesday, a suicide bombing devastated Forward Operating Base Chapman, a hub of counterterrorism and intelligence operations for the CIA. A number of the officers killed had been counterterrorism operatives since before the 9/11 attacks. The base played a critical role in the CIA's significant operations in the country, including helping with drone attacks and informant networks in Pakistan.  The suicide bomber was a regular CIA informant who had visited the same base multiple times in the past.

IRAQ: The US released the leader of an Iranian-backed Shia terror group behind the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007.  Qais Qazali, the leader of the Asaib al Haq or the League of the Righteous, was set free by the US military and transferred to Iraqi custody in exchange for the release of British hostage Peter Moore, US military officers and intelligence officials told The Long War Journal.

SOLDIER BEAR: Archival film of Free Polish Forces in WWII.

DEER VS. VACUUM in Des Moines.

CUTOUT BIN: From Nancy Wilson to Iggy Pop, from the Feelies to the Ohio Players, from the Box Tops to the English Beat, plus the Replacements, the Delfonics, Joe Jackson, Telekenesis, the Seeds and more  -- this weekend's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

CHARLIE SHEEN: Brooke Mueller wants the court to modify the protective order so she can have contact with Charlie Sheen and try and save her marriage.  Of course, it might also be that she's worried about the Los Angeles County's Department of Children and Family Services investigation.  Or concerned about the tabloids' sudden interest in her criminal record, which I'm sure Sheen's people had nothing to do with.  Meanwhile, Sheen ex Denise Richards threatens to start talking more about Sheen.

TIGER WOODS underwent reconstruction surgery after being smashed in the face with a golf club by his wife?

DAVID LETTERMAN: The TV producer accused of shaking down the late night host to keep mum about his affairs is drawing on the Tiger Woods sex scandal to try to bolster his defense.

ROMAN POLANSKI the director and convicted rapist is suing photographers for £700,000 after claiming his privacy had been invaded while under house arrest in Gstaad. YEMEN: Security forces stormed an al-Qaeda hide-out Wednesday in a principle militant stronghold in the country's west, setting off clashes, officials said, as a security chiefvowed to fight the group's powerful local branch until it was eliminated.  Better late than never, as known terrorists wanted by the US government continue to operate in the open while the Yemeni government looks the other way.

IRAN: Iran's state media reported that leaders of the opposition had fled Tehran -- a claim denied by the son of Mahdi Karroubi. Other reports indicate that the Supreme National Security Council has ordered a complete check-up of the jet which is on standby to fly Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei and his family to Russia should the situation in Iran spiral out of control. Iranian police vowed to crush protesters with "no mercy," while supporters of Ahmadinejad's regime hosted counter-protests.

AFGHANISTAN: Corruption and incompetence in President Karzai's Government - particularly at local level - have forced a growing number of people to seek the services of the Taliban.

JFK HOAX: TMZ obtained a never-before published photograph which appears to show John F. Kennedy on a boat filled with naked women -- only to discover it was actually a photo from a 1967 Playboy photo shoot.

TERROR in the USA: Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the US from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007.  Probably not the right time to be trying to send another 100 or so Yemeni detainees from Gitmo to Saudi Arabia's "rehabilitation" program for jihadis.

YEMEN: The US has quietly opened a third, largely covert front in the war against Al Qaeda in Yemen. Regular Pate visitors already knew Yemen was a hotbed. The ever-reliable Sun claims that British cops fear that 25 British-born Muslims are in Yemen, plotting to bomb Western airliners.

IRAN will possess the technology to build a nuclear bomb by early 2010 and be able to produce one the following year, Israeli media quoted Israel's defense minister as saying Monday.  Coincidentally -- or not -- Israel has called all of its ambassadors and consuls home for meetings this week in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, an Iranian-style intifada seems to be in the making.  The Daily Beast collected videos of street battles.  A number of opposition figures were arrested Monday in the wake of violent nationwide protests a day earlier, Web sites reported, including three top aides to the opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi and the leader of a banned political group, Ibrahim Yazdi.

VIC CHESTNUTT died on Christmas Day at 45 from an apparent drug overdose. Chesnutt was partially paralyzed and has used a wheelchair since age 18, when he was involved in a car accident. Tributes have been posted at REM HQ and by Kristin Hersh. He played a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR in 2008, and a set with Elf Power for Daytrotter last June.

CLEM SNIDE did the four free songs thing for Daytrotter, one previously unreleased.

THE BEST OF NPR MUSIC LIVE: Downloads, downloads, downloads.

RAY DAVIES: NPR's Jeff Lunden sings with his choir.

SCOTT NEUSTADTER, co-writer of (500) Days of Summer, played Guest DJ at KCRW.

MIIKE SNOW dropped "Silvia" in advance of its release on January 25th.

CRACKER: David Lowery talks to the North County Times about visiting Iraq and the band's latest album.

MYSPACE: Carrie Brownstein reports on the site's continuing import as a music discovery service.

HA HA TONKA: Brian Roberts talks to JamBase about the literaray influences on the band's latest album.

IN MEMORIAM: NPR Music remembers the singers, instrumentalists, songwriters and producers who died in 2009.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Avatar dominated cineplexes again with another 75 million total, a mere 2.6 percent drop from its near-record opening, shattering the 200 million mark domestically.  Avatar has made almost twice as much elsewhere, for a total to date over 615 million dollars.  Sherlock Holmes debuted in the second slot with 65.4 million, which would be mighty impressive in just about any year without Avatar. Holmes took in a record 25.5 million on Christmas.  Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel took in 50.2 million over the three-day weekend for a 77 million total.  It's complicated opened in the fourth slot with 22.1 million.  Up in the Air expanded to the round out the Top Five with 11.8 million, and has almost recouped its 25 million budget domestically.  Below the fold, Nine expanded and jumped from 20th to eighth place with 5.5 million.  The Princess and the Frog dropped from second to seventh and A Christmas Carol managed only 12th place, in what must be a double disappointment at Disney.

SHERLOCK HOLMES falls into my "good, but not great bin."  Borrowing ideas from similarly-themed films (Young Sherlock Holmes, From Hell), this one will do much better on the performance of Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes.  The supporting cast is pleasant enough, but Jude Law is not all that impressive, and Rachel McAdams is given action, but not much to do with her character.  The other reason this one will do better is timing.  In one sense, this movie is CSI: Old London, and the success of the CSI franchise on TV (and NCIS, for that matter) has brought deduction back into fashion.

CHARLIE SHEEN was busted in Aspen on a domestic violence beef... but his wife Brooke has fessed up that her allegation was phony? Or is the recantation phony, to be followed by a divorce? Sheen's manager denies the divorce claim.

SUSAN SARANDON and TIM ROBBINS split after 23 years of non-marital relations.

STEVEN TYLER has entered a rehab facility after months of bizarre, back-and-forth behavior that left his band mates wondering if the ride was over for good.

COURTNEY LOVE: New docs filed by the guardianship for Frances Bean Cobain ask to seal all court documents that relate "to a minor and allegations of domestic violence."

THE INCREASINGLY POOR DECISIONS OF TODD MARGARET: David Cross, Will Arnett and... Spike Jonze! Watch three minutes now. (language) (Thx, TV's Andy Levy.)

THE 50 HOTTEST DEAD PEOPLE of the DECADE, courtesy of Best Week Ever.

THE BEST USES OF CHICAGO IN FILM of the decade, according to TimeOut Chicago.

TERROR in the USA: A Nigerian man who said he was an agent for al Qaeda tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane Friday as it was preparing to land in Detroit, but travelers who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers rushed to subdue him. The plot was organized and launched by al Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect's underwear before sending him on his mission, according to federal authorities. Officials now say tragedy was only averted on Northwest flight 253 because a makeshift detonator failed to work properly.

IRAN: Police opened fire on protesters in Tehran on Sunday, killing at least four people, including a nephew of the opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi, as vast crowds of demonstrators flooded the streets of cities across Iran and fiercely fought security forces, according to witnesses and opposition Web sites. Slain protester Neda Soltan was named Person of the Year by the Times of London.

AFGHANISTAN: Secretive branches of the military's Special Operations forces have increased counterterrorism missions against some of the most lethal groups in Afghanistan and, because of their success, plan an even bigger expansion next year, according to American commanders.

THE 13 CUTEST ANIMALS of 2009, courtesy of Videogum.

OTTERS on a PLANE: An employee at Houston's Bush Airport was hurt Tuesday night after a bizarre incident that delayed a Continental Airlines flight bound for Columbus for about 90 minutes.

A MALE DEER was caught shopping at a grocery store in Palm Harbor, FL.

THE SQUIRREL THREAT: Militant rodents stole Christmas in Fredericton, Canada.

A STOLEN EXOTIC LIZARD was recovered after a father and son tried to exchange it for booze. Did I mention this was in Kentucky?
