THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with JOHN HUGHES! The sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, buds, wasteoids, dweebies and dickheads, they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude. The writer/director behind "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Weird Science," National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies, "Home Alone," "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" and many more died Aug 5, 2009.  Hughes masterfully married music to movies, so I pay video tribute to him today, starting (of course) with "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds from The Breakfast Club (the drumming on this song is impeccable), and Karla DeVito's "We Are Not Alone," along with the Ramones playing "Blitzkrieg Bop" (from National Lampoon's Vacation), David Bowie's "Young Americans" and The Vapors one-hit wonder, "Turning Japanese" and Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" (all from Sixteen Candles, which opens to a clip of veteran WLS DJs Larry Lujack and Tommy Edwards), Van Halen's cover of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and General Public's "Tenderness" (both from Weird Science), the Psychedelic Furs re-recorded title track from Pretty In Pink, which also featured Jon Cryer lip-synching to Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness" (that last clip is a blistering live take from the 1967 Stax tour -- and excellent, btw), The Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (a Hughes perennial), and OMD's "If You Leave," plus two more from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, "Danke Schoen" and "Twist and Shout" (which was shot on Dearborn and Randolph Streets in Chicago, with International Polka Queen Vlasta atop the float, though Cameron and Sloane were in front of the Post Office), plus Yello's unforgettable-no-matter-how-you-try "Oh, Yeah." Videos are scarce for Some Kind of Wonderful, but I found Flesh for Lulu's "I Go Crazy" and the March Violets' take on the Stones' "Miss Amanda Jones."

FRANZ FEDRINAND played sessions at Morning Becomes Eclectic and WNYC Soundcheck.

SAVAGES play a savage mini-set at WNYC Soundcheck.

THE ARAB SPRING: A gift to Al Qaeda?

IRAN: A letter purportedly signed by over 50 prominent political prisoners, most of whom are currently incarcerated, was sent to President Obama urging him to seek dialogue with new president Rouhani, to remove sanctions, and to seek a "dignified" solution to the issue of Iran's nuclear program. Two days ago, in his first press conference, President Rouhani called for direct talks with the US on the nuclear issue, but said the US must take the initiative; the US said the ball was in Iran's court.

SYRIA: Rebels led by two al Qaeda affiliates, the Al Nusrah Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, have killed over 200 people, captured dozens of villages, and seized an airport over the past two days in an Alawite area. THE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB WAS DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA 68 years ago today. The act that ushered in the nuclear age, but also helped end World War II, still stokes controversy. Three men involved in the attack on Hiroshima share their memories with the BBC. Film showing the effects of the attack was classified for decades, as were the complete (unredacted) "Magic" military intercepts, which tend to show Japan was not about to surrender. Those interested in a relatively neutral view of the events leading to the bombing could do worse than 1995's Hiroshima, a joint Canadian-Japanese production for Showtime.

AMERICAN special forces units overseas have been on alert for the past several days for a mission to attack potential al Qaeda targets if those behind the most recent terror threats against US interests can be identified, a senior Obama administration official told CNN. US officials acknowledged the interception of messages last week from al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri ordering al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to attack Western interests as early as Aug. 4. The State Department added Rwanda, Burundi, Madagascar, and Mauritius to the list of countries where US diplomatic missions have been closed due to the al Qaeda threat. The State Dept. is reevaluating a previous assessment that downplayed the degree of Iranian support for terrorist activity in Latin America.

EGYPT: Supporters of former president Mohammed Morsi continued protests calling for his reinstatement.

JACK WHITE's ex, Karen Elson, filed for a restraining order, alleging he wanted her to contact their kids’ private school in an effort to get their kids out of a class in which another entertainer’s child was present (apparently Dan Auerbach's).  White also allegedly berated Elson when she attended the wedding of a rival musician.  In both cases, White allegedly was upset at other musicians "ripping off" his style.  White filed a countermotion disputing the allegations.

THE TOP 100 LPs OF 1985, according to Slicing Up Eyeballs readers. I'd argue the order, mostly.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 2 Guns tops the chart with 27 million, with the typical Denzel Washington number slightly boosetd by Mark Wahlberg.  This flick cost 61 million, which is like money in the bank with a Denzel pic, especially after overseas numbers come in.Speaking of global markets, The Wolverine skids 59 percent to place with 21.7 million, but its 95 million total to date pales against 159 overseas.  Smurfs 2 shows with an 18.2 million debut, mildly restoring my faith in humanity, as this could have been No. 1 against a Denzel opening.  The Conjuring drops 39 percent to No. 4 with 13.6 million, but it's pretty leggy, breaking the 100 million mark against a 20 million budget and is now launching overseas.  Despicable Me 2 rounds out the Top 5 with another 10.3 million, which is probably this week's real story.  DM2 is now Universal's third-highest grosser, trailing only E.T. and Jurassic Park.

THE CONJURING: I'm a bit behind on seeing this one, because horror isn't really my genre.  But this old school exorcism pic, minus the torture pr0n so common these days, was pretty darn good, led by a quartet of good actors: Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air), Lili Taylor (High Fidelity); Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and Ron Livingston (TV's Sex and the City).  It's so old school as to be set in the 70s, when exorcism first made a splash in film.  And it's "based on a true story," though when Farmiga's character identifies herself jokingly as a "kook," one suspects that's the real true story.  Nevertheless, for what it is, it's interesting even between the scares and confident to be restrained in its creepiness.
