THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART are picking up buzz; this piece in Exclaim is a decent intro, with refs to My Bloody Valentine, JAMC, and the Field Mice being fairly common.  After watching "Everything With You," you may want to stream a few more. (Thx, Chromewaves.)

DR. DOG hit the World Cafe on Friday; you can stream the set on demand via NPR.

GARY LOURIS & MARK OLSON stopped by The Current for a chat and mini-set streaming via MPR.

DAVID VANDERVELDE does the four free songs thing for Daytrotter, all selections from Waiting For The Sunrise.

RYAN ADAMS, who was quitting music and blogging? Not so much.

DEWEY MARTIN, drummer for the groundbreaking but notoriously feuding and short-lived rock pioneers Buffalo Springfield, was found dead February 1 in Van Nuys, Calif. He was 68.  So I gotta relink a medley.

MAGAZINE: Howard Devoto talks about the band's reunion in... wait for it... the Financial Times.

PHOSPHORESCENT: Matthew Houck talks to Spinner about his lifelong love for Willie Nelson.

PINETOP PERKINS, a blues legend with whom Pate drummer Jon Hahn has played, was featured on All Things Considered in connection with his Grammy nom at age 95.

THE ACORN: Rolf Klausener talks to the National Post about how the band got in good with Elbow and Kanye.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: People were into He's Just Not That Into You to the tune of 27.5 million -- and it will probably hold well for Valentine's Day, which makes this a big win for producer Drew Barrymore.  Taken held really well in the second slot, taking another 20.3 million.  Coraline debuted in third with 16.3 million, surprising many who expected The Pink Panther 2 to make more (it debuted in the fourth slot with 12 million).  Paul Blart: Mall Cop rounded out the Top Five with another 11 million.  Below the fold, Push debuted in sixth place with 10 million, while Gran Torino and Slumdog Millionaire held well, dropping only 10 and three percent, respectively.  Overall, receipts were up about 45 percent year-over-year.

THE GRAMMY AWARDS went to these folks.  A very good night for Robert Plant & Alison Krauss (and T-Bone Burnett).  Adele, Duffy, Kings of Leon and Radiohead also got prizes.

THE BAFTA AWARDS went to these people.  Slumdog Millionaire walked off with seven awards

JESSICA SIMPSON forgot her lyrics, struggled with her ear monitors, mumbled through songs and fought back tears at a concert Thursday night.

CLARE DANES & HUGH DANCY are engaged; the pair met while filming Evening.

CHRISTIAN BALE apologized for his profane onset rant at a lighting dude, months later, after it became public and bad PR.

NATALIE PORTMAN & MICHELLE WILLIAMS star in a fake perfume ad directed by Roman Polanski.

ETTA JAMES says she's just kidding about wanting to deliver a beatdown to Beyonce (but does feel snubbed by Pres. Obama).

VAL KILMER is thinking about running for Governor of New Mexico.  IIRC, he's floated this idea before.  I would laugh, but I live in Illinois, where Kilmer could be a step up.

IRAN is building four more satellites, the telecommunications minister was quoted as saying.  Fmr. Pres. Khatami said he would run for the presidency again in June's election.  Most of the media will portray him as more "moderate" or "pro-Western," but "moderate" is a highly relative term -- for example, Khatami does not think Hezbollah is a terror group, compared Fmr. Pres. Bush to Osama bin Laden during a US visit, and has a lame record on democracy and human rights.

AFGHANISTAN: The commander of NATO said targeted raids against drug kingpins will begin within days.

CAT and BABY SQUIRRELS, living together... mass hysteria.

SMART DEER stops by PetSmart for veterinary services.

A RARE PINK PIGEON looks for love in Des Moines.

PAW PAWS URBAN RETREAT opens in Sydney, Australia, Aparrently, there is no downturn Down Under.

A GAZE OF RACCOONS invades the Whte House grounds. The Secret Service may want to check for squirrel involvement.

THE STANS: CIA-directed airstrikes against al-Qaeda leaders and facilities in Pakistan over the past six to nine months have been so successful, according to senior US officials, that it is now possible to foresee a "complete al-Qaeda defeat" in the mountainous region along the border with Afghanistan. Except I don't see how that lasts without also defeating or accommodating the Taliban. Contrast that with the story that the Pentagon's top military officers are recommending that Pres. Obama shift strategy in Afghanistan - to focus on ensuring regional stability and eliminating Taliban and Al Qaeda safe havens in Pakistan, rather than on achieving lasting democracy and a thriving Afghan economy.  Meanwhile, the campaign against the Taliban suffered two logistical blows Tuesday as the president of Kyrgyzstan announced that he'd shut a US airbase in his country and the Taliban in Pakistan blew up a bridge, disrupting the main US supply route into Afghanistan.
