PHIL COLLINS sings  “In The Air Tonight” and Genesis’ “Land Of Confusion” (for the first time in 9 years) with a middle school band for Twofer Tuesday. Not the greatest performances, but a very nice gesture.

PARQUET COURTS advance streams Sunbathing Animal.

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY advance streams Only Run.

CHRISSIE HYNDE talks to The Guardian about her first rock show, going solo after 35 years in The Pretenders, and more.

THE 20 BEST ELVIS COSTELLO SONGS, according to Paste.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: X-Men: Days of Future Past dominates the chart with 111 million over the holiday weekend, 94.1 million over the regular weekend. The number of 90+ million debuts this yearhas to have studios smiling (and bodes well for the next Transformers flick).  There was a bit of frontloading, but the mutants' worldwide haul will likely make up for any money lost on X-Men: First Class, even with a 200 million budget to recoup. Getting Lennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender (likely on the cheap, before they became huge stars) in on the ground floor of the reboot is paying dividends now.  Godzilla places with 39.4 million, taking a 58 percent hit from Marvel's heroes. The big lizard still has 323 million worldwide...and does not open in China and Japan until June and July.  The debut of Blended shows with 18.2 million against a 40 million budget, a measure of how much Adam Sandler has damaged his brand these past few years; even Drew Barrymore was no help here.  Neighbors was close behind with 17.2 million and a 117 million domestic total against an 18 million budget. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 rounds out the Top 5 with another 10 million, taking a big hit from the X-Men and the perception that it isn't up to snuff.  Yet overseas, Spidey has alreadygrossked 489 million, whereas the (better) Captain America sequel has 453 million.

IAN McKELLEN, a/k/a Magneto, Gandalf, etc., just turned 75; Digital Spy lists eight of his great performances.

KIM KARDASHIAN & KANYE WEST wed over the weekend. The New York Post rose to the challenge.

EMMA WATSON graduated from Brown University with a degree in English Lit.

CHRISTINA RICCI is pregnant and expecting her first child with husband James Heerdegen.

FLOYD MERRIWEATHER & T.I. got into a fight at Fatburger.

DAREDEVIL gets a new showrunner, as the original choice heads off to helm The Sinister Six.

UKRAINIAN anti-terrorist forces, backed by fighter jets and helicopters, attacked armed militants who took over Donetsk International Airport on Monday, destroying an anti-aircraft gun mounted by insurgents. The assault came even as president-elect -- and chocolate magnate -- Petro Poroshenko pledged to travel to eastern regions to seek peace with insurgents.

VENEZUELA: The wives of two Venezuelan opposition mayors ousted during anti-government protests have won landslide victories in special elections to choose their husbands' replacements.

LIBYA: Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan National Army, called newly-elected Prime Minister Meitig "illegitimate" and said parliamentary elections should be postponed for at least three months while LNA forces rid the country of terrorists. Haftar's forces are conducting reconnaissance over Derna, looking for Islamist militants, including Ansar al Sharia.

SYRIA: A May 3 message from al Qaeda emir Ayman al Zawahiri was posted on jihadist forums, calling for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham to leave Syria and fight in Iraq, and urging clashing jihadists in Syria to submit to an independent sharia court.

LION & TIGER & BEAR: Oh, my!

DOGS' PLAY: Beneath this apparently frivolous fun lies a hidden language of honesty and deceit, empathy and perhaps even a humanlike morality.

HERRING also have an interesting way of communicating.

MEMORIAL DAY has become -- in the minds of some -- a day devoted to uncovering their swimming pools and barbeques. So take a moment (preferably at 3 p.m. local time) to remember what it's really about. At least I think, that's still the deal -- the Remember.gov still seems to be down (good job, feds).  Joyce Johnson and the "Arlington Ladies" who attend every funeral in Arlington National Cemetery, to ensure no soldier is buried alone, take more than a moment.  Re-read "A Death in the Family," as powerful as it was when Christopher Hitchens wrote it in 2007.  Revisit William Wyler's footage of the last mission of the Memphis Belle, or check the Tube for Alfred Hitchcock's footage of the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp.  The Wikipedia entry for Memorial Day notes a race track connection unrelated to the Indy 500.  It's a good day -- as good as we are likely to get -- for Sgt. Barry Sadler's No. 1 smash, "Ballad of the Green Berets."  or the movie adaptation of Gen. George S. Patton's "Speech to the Third Army."  As "Greyhawk" once wrote at the Mudville Gazette, "This is Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy it. Celebrate it - the people who died to give you that right would appreciate it. But they didn't die peaceably in their beds, these dogs who fell protecting sheep from wolves."

F----ED UP: The name is a marketing challenge.

JACK WHITE talks Meg White.

CUTOUT BIN: From Devo to the Spinners, from Ozzy Osbourne to Sandie Shaw, from Wire to the Beastie Bots, plus the Pretenders, Wreckless Eric, the Tubes, Michael Jackson and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases are -- X-Men: Days of Future Past, currently scoring 93 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and Blended, scoring 13 percent.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is one of my favorite runs of one of my favorite comics.  The film could not be made to match it and remain a mass entertainment.  Indeed, Fox has already deviated from the X-Men canon enough that you could not film this series verbatim.  Moreover, Fox has simply not done as well by its Marvel properties in general as Marvel Studios has. Accordingly, I entered the theater with equal measures of anticipation and dread.  I am happy to report that, as a mass entertainment, X-Men: Days of Future Past is better than I expected and quite probably the best film of the franchise, in part because it assumes you have seen the prior four movies and thus starts from a deeper level (I suspect those who have not seen them may find themselves a bit lost at times).  Some of the new deviations in this film are for understandable commercial purposes and one serves a theme not present in the original (and verges on dopey, but I can live with it).  There are also some timeline problems arising from the attempt to construct a coherent timeline, but this isn't much more bothersome than the issues attendant to almost any movie involving time travel.  (Oddly, untl watching this as a film, I hadn't realized the basic story is an inversion of a classic time travel plot.)  The cast here sprawls from the first three installments to the prequel (X-Men: First Class), and throws in new characters for good measure; the Fox version of one such figure is likely much removed from the version we have seen/will see in the next Avengers movie, and yet provides comic relief for a summer tentpole.  Peter Dinklage is also great fun to watch as Bolivar Trask...and someone else. There are a number of action set pieces, but I credit the current creative team for letting the characters drive the plot and not resorting to the the destruction of another CGI city.  And if you wanna know what the new future holds for our merry mutants, stick around to the end of the credits.

BRYAN SINGER, director of X-Men: DOFP,  filed a motion to dismiss the sexual assault case against him for lack of jurisdiction.

CHARLIE SHEEN and RHIANNA are having an online feudTwo rounds so far.

ELIN NORDEGREN talks Tiger Woods for the first time since their split.

THE FLASH has a five-minute trailer online.

LIFE ITSELF: The trailer for the documentary about Roger Ebert is online.

UKRAINE: Sixteen people were killed an attack overnight on soldiers in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, local health officials said, in the latest spike in violence ahead of the weekend's presidential election.

RUSSIA has pulled off a major political coup by securing a landmark 400 billion dollar natural gas agreement with China, a move that will come as a blow to US efforts to isolate the Kremlin.

VENEZUELA: Blame it on the World Cup. That's what Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is doing to explain why airlines are slashing flights to the crisis-plagued South American nation.

NIGERIA: The UN added Boko Haram (a.k.a. Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad) to its list of al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups, stating that it is an affiliate of both al Qaeda and its north African offshoot, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The designation noted that Boko Haram is also associated with Ansaru (a.k.a. Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis-Sudan). The UN said Boko Haram members have trained with AQIM, fought in Mali, conduct attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria and Cameroon, and operate also in Chad and Niger. France vowed to treat Boko Haram like al Qaeda.
