DISNEY BUYS LUCASFILM for 4.05 billion in cash and stock; Star Wars Episode VII targeted for 2015 release.  What say you, Lord Vader?  One would like to think that the Mouse could do better with this franchise, but George already has story treatments.  That said, this is a relative steal for Disney, which paid more for Pixar.  Disney gets not only the residuals and merch rights, but also Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, which work on most every Hollywood blockbuster  -- including those from Marvel Studios, which Disney also bought not too long ago.  The Avengers 2 just got cheaper to make through the magic of creative accounting, wherein Disney pays itself for work it once paid Lucas.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Argo ascends to the top of the chart with 12.4 million. Despite a 25 percent drop, Argo has taken in 60.7 million domestic aginst a 44.5 million budget.  Hotel Transylvania shows with 9.5 million on family traffic during the week preceeding Halloween.  Cloud Atlas shows with a 9.4 million debut, which is almost certain disaster given a budget reportedly north of 100 million.  It also suffered from perhaps the worst release timing since Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or High School Musical 3, and might have done better with a later platform release.  Paranormal Activity 4 takes the fourth slot with 8.7 million, plummeting 70 percent from its debut -- but it still takes 42 million domestic against a 5 million budget.  Silent Hill: Revelation 3D rounds out the Top 5 with a 8 million debut against a 20 million budget.  Below the fold, Fun Size had a 10th place, 4 million debut, while Chasing Mavericks opened in 13th place with 2.2 million.  Overall box office was down about 20 percent from last weekend.

CLOUD ATLAS, written and directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer, is every bit as philosophical a fim as the original Matrix, albeit with much less martial arts action.  It is a film about the human condition, primarily our struggles for love, liberty, truth and beauty in the face of our myriad vices.  As such, it is perhaps unsurpsising that the film is an interesting mess.  Its screenplay (which is reportedly even more convoluted in structure than the novel from which it is adapted) and editing gather power and coherence over the films nearly 3-hour length, risking that less patient viewers will mentally check out earlier.  Points played for comedy in one storyline emerge as horror in another.  The eleborate makeup on a cast playing multiple roles over multiple centuries occasionally succeeds brilliantly, but occasionally fails distractingly, which is a shame, because the marketing focus on Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Jim Broadbent may tend to overshadow wonderful performances from Ben Winshaw (The Hour) and Hugh Grant in supporting roles.  Should you decide to ss Cloud Atlas, the best approach may be to simply let it wash over you in first viewing, and save the analysis for later.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE apologized for a "wedding video" that ostensibly mocked the homeless.
