THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with THE GO-GOs!  They made history as the first all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts. Kind of a hard band to place seasonally. Their debut, Beauty and the Beat, which yielded hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," as well as great album cuts like "This Town," "Lust to Love," "Tonite" and "How Much More," came out in late Summer 1981, iirc, and "Lips" was climbing the charts that Fall, so I mentally place the band in this time of year. And it's still warm enough that the title track to the too-quick sophomore album, "Vacation," -- or their cover of the Capitols' "Cool Jerk" -- doesn't sound too out of place. "Get Up and Go" was also a single from that LP, but it didn't make the Top 40.  The band would chart twice more -- in 1984, with "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You" -- before splitting and the near-inevitable reunion tours.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Downton Abbey tops the chart with 30MM against a reported budget of 13-20MM. And it's made almost that much outside North America. My guess would be this was a very front-loaded movie for fans of the show, so good thing they had a big debut.  Ad Astra places with 19.2MM, while Rambo: Last Blood shows with 19MM -- close enough that this could flip when moving from estimates to actuals. Ad Astra's budget was reportedly anywhere from 80-100MM, so it has some work to do if it wants to replicate the success of Gravity or Interstellar.  The Rambo flick was budgeted at only 50MM and the return is probably disappointing even at that, echoing the flop of Rocky Balboa before Stallone retooled for CreedIt: Chapter Two takes the fourth slot with 17.2MM, badly trailing its predecessor (which in fairness made a surprising mountain of cash).  Hustlers rounds out the Top Five with 17MM on a 49 percent drop, still a big win for the studio.

THE EMMYS went to these people. Congrats. As someone who liked Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Game of Thrones, and Chernobyl, I can't complain much.
