THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY STARTS HERE:

...with THE BEAT FARMERS!  Making a tradition of this more sober than usual, professionally-shot, early BF gig recorded at Universal Studios, including "There She Goes Again" (VU); "Road to Ruin," "Bigger Fool," "Reason to Believe" (Springsteen), "Powderfinger" (N. Young), "Happy Boy," "Big Ugly Wheels," "Bigger Stones," "Gun Sale at the Church," "Dallas Blues," "I Wanna Be Free," "Lakeside Trailer Park," "Death Train," and "Seven Year Itch."  If you're new to the band, my picks would be "Bigger Stones," "Happy Boy" and the cover of your choice.  BONUS:  Now how much would you pay?  But wait... there's more!  If you really want to see someone put the "bar" in "bar band," watch these NSFW clips from Houston, TX of the late Country Dick Montana leading the band through "Lucille" (K. Rogers) -- complete with his favorite beer bottle stunts -- followed by "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Wino," "Are You Drinkin' With Me, Jesus?" and "Mondo."  SUPER-SPECIAL BONUS: Country Dick rolls out "California Kid" and "Anarchy in the UK" (Language warning).

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker easily repeats atop the chart with 72MM on a 60 percent drop. That seems steep, but not as steep as The Last Jedi's slide and Episode IX seems set to surpass Episode VIII at this point in its run, despite opening 20 percent lower.  That said, it may top out about where TLJ did, at 620MM domestic.  Jumanji: The Next Level places with another 35.3MM on a 33 percent rise for the post-Christmas frame.  Little Women shows with 15.5MM and a 29MM total since its opening.  Frozen II holds its own in the fourth slot with 16.5MM with a 27 percent post-holiday bump.  Spies In Disguise rounds out the Top Five with 13.2MM (better than the Ferdinand movie that opened in this frame in 2017).  Below the fold, Cats continues to bomb and is set to lose around 71MM.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Rise of Skywalker obviously tops the chart with 175MM, which is about where tracking gurus predicted, though below the 190s they were dreaming of on Fridayand below the 220MM opening of The Last Jedi.  That said, it's still the third-biggest December debut ever, and it opened much closer to Christmas than its predecessors.  How might it do going forward?  The Rise of Skywalker got a B+ Cinemascore, which is the lowest of the series.  OTOH, it has an 86 percent audience score at Rotten Tomatoes (where The Last Jedi was infamously 43 percent).  Jumanji: The Next Level placed with 26.1MM on a 56 percent drop, the biggest victim of the Star Wars (even so, it crossed the 100MM mark, as did Ford v Ferrari).  Frozen II showed with 12.3MM on a fairly leggy 36 percent drop.  Cats debuted in the fourth slot with 6.5MM, a huge bomb that may draw an audience fascinated with the awful reviews.  Knives Out rounded out the Top Five with 6.1MM on a leggy 33 percent drop, given that it ceded almost 900 screens to the glactic conflict.

COMING SOON:The holiday's wide releases include Uncut Gems, currently scoring 93 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; Spies in Disguise, currently scoring 76 percent; and Little Women, scoring 93 percent.
