THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with SHINDIG! Barry McGuire is joined by the beta version of the Grass Roots on "Out of Sight," and all of them are joined by The Mamas & Papas and Larry Knechtel for Dylan's "She Belongs To Me."  The Grass Roots then play "Ain't That Lovin You Baby."  Barry and the Mamas & Papas cover "Yesterday," Barry drops out for "I Call Your Name" and "Somebody Groovy," but joins in again for "Do You Believe In Magic?", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", and "Precious Time."  The big finish is a cover of the McCoys' "Hang On Sloopy".

THE SHINS cover Squeeze's "Goodbye Girl" for Levi's Pioneer Sessions.

LOVE LANGUAGE is advance streaming Libraries via Sub Pop, which says it "captures Spector-esque walls of reckless sound, cavernous drums, middle-school percussion, and moody swells of stringed instruments, all decorated hastily with stray leads, which bleed beautifully all over everything."

BONNAROO: Don't forget that NPR will have sets from bands like Local Natives, Temper Trap, The XX streaming on demand, as well as a live stream from the festival.

DELTA SPIRIT stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a chat and mini-set.

JANIS JOPLIN is one of Morning Edition's 50 Great Voices.

SEALS & CROFT: "Summer Breeze." Because it's that time of year in this hemisphere.

KINGS GO FORTH: Andy Noble, founding bassist of the ten-piece, Milwaukee-based soul orchestra, talks to The New Yorker about his former gig as a record store owner.  And if you haven't heard the band, you can check 'em out via the ol' HM.

RICHARD THOMPSON talks music with The Telegraph as he prepares to curate this year's Meltdown festival today.

BYRON COLEY talks in-depth to Perfect Sound Forever. And if you don't know who he is, all the more reason to click.

JAY-Z, in a Rolling Stone cover story, talks up indie rock.

THE 50 GREATEST GUITARISTS EVER, as ordained by Slash, Brian Lauritzen of KUSC, Fred Child of American Public Media, Gary Wagner of KKJZ, Uncle Joe Benson of KLOS, Smithsonian Folkways, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry.

THE CUTOUT BIN: From Wire to Manfred Mann's Earth Band, from the Bangles to the Chiffons, from Echo & the Bunnymen to Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, plus Stevie Wonder, the Buzzcocks, the Rolling Stones and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: The enormous depth of Hollywood's creativity is unleashed with this weekend's wide releases, which are The Karate Kid, which is currently scoring 58 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and The A-Team, which is scoring 50 percent.

LINDSAY LOHAN has been approached by Donald Trump to star in the next "Celebrity Apprentice" season.

NORTH KOREA's currency devaluation, apparently an attempt to prop up a foundering state-run economy, was for some the worst disaster since a famine that killed hundreds of thousands in the mid-1990s.

IRAN: One day after the Security Council approved new sanctions against them, the authorities in Tehran threatened to revise their relationship with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, using familiar language that has in the past presaged moves to limit global oversight of Iran's nuclear program.

AFGHANISTAN: Gen. McCrystal said Thursday that major parts of the military operation to secure Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban movement, would be pushed back because it was taking longer than expected to win local support.  Meanwhile, suspected Taliban militants executed a seven-year-old boy in southern Afghanistan after accusing him of spying for the government.
