EGYPT: A proposal by Salafis to give Egypt's main Islamic institution the final say on whether the law of the land adheres to Islamic laws threatens to bring the already painfully slow process of drafting the new constitution to a grinding halt. Riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets late Wednesday outside the US Embassy in Cairo to keep protesters away from the building's perimeter. Although Egypt's prime minister called Tuesday's incident "regrettable" and unjustified, Pres Mohamed Morsi condemned the anti-Muslim film that incited the protesters. One hitch: this was never really about the movie, which may not even exist. The "protest" was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman, who is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

LIBYA: The consulate where the American ambassador to Libya was killed on Tuesday is an "interim facility" not protected by the contingent of Marines that safeguards embassies.  US sources say they do not believe the attacks that killed Amb. Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya, were in reaction to the online release of a film mocking Islam, reports CNN. A squad of US troops despatched by helicopter across the Libyan desert to rescue besieged diplomats from Benghazi on Wednesday ran into a fierce overnight ambush that left a further two Americans dead, Libyan officials told Reuters.
