BOBBY WOMACK the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and personally infamous  gospel-soul singer-songwriter discovered by Sam Cooke, died Friday. He was 70.  One of his early songs, "It's All Over Now," was a number one hit for the Rolling Stones, who swiftly paid tribute to Womack on Twitter.  He also has a credit on Wilson Pickett's "I'm a Midnight Mover" and Janis Joplin's "Trust Me," among others. Womack's solo career also produced gems like "Across 110th Street," from the blaxploitation film of the same name, and later featured in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown... and in American Gangster.  In 2012, Womack talked to All Things Considered about his health and career, as well as Bravest Man in the Universe, a seemingly unlikely collaboration with Blur's Damon Albarn.  At The Observer, rock journalist Barney Hoskyns recalls being on the road with the R&B star.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Transformers: Age of Extinction easily tops the chart with 100 million, just about as projected. Critics hate Michael bay movies; audiences love them.  Even more impressive is the 200 million in overseas receipts (0 million in China alone), as the release of this fourth installment of the franchise is being staggered to avoid competing with the World Cup. 22 Jump Street could be called a distant second with 15.4 million, but a 44 percent drop is not bad at this point and this sequel has already beaten the domestic theatrical run of the original with almost 140 million total so far. How To Train Your Dragon 2 shows with13.1 million on a 47 percent drop and is now seriously lagging the original in America, but at least has crossed the 200 million mark in total receipts.  Think Like A Man Too, last weekend's champ, slides to the fourth slot with 10.4 million on a 64 percent drop, which would be bad news if it hadn't already earned twice its production budget.  Maleficent rounds out the Top 5 with 8.2 million on the summer's leggiest run to date and now seems likely to profit based on 585 million in global receipts.

SYRIA: A day after the Al Nusrah Front's emir for Albu Kamal in Deir Izzour issued a statement explaining that he was relinquishing the town to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham to avoid jihadist bloodshed, other Al Nusrah fighters and allied Islamist fighters captured two ISIS positions in the strategic border town.

IRAQ; After the United States delayed a sale of fighter jets to Iraq, Russia sold planes to the Iraqi government. Now they've sent military experts to Baghdad. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham announced the formation of the Caliphate, changed its name to the Islamic State, and named Abu Bakr al Baghdadi as Caliph Ibrahim. The Iraqi military is reported to have withdrawn most of its ground forces from Tikrit after entering the city just one day ago. Heavy fighting has been reported in and around Tikrit.
