WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Ant-Man and The Wasp flies to the top of the chart with an estimated 76MM, toward the lower end of tracking estimates despite a strong Friday that had people thinking 85MM was possible.  Nevertheless, this sequel opens 33 percent above the original and its 85MM foreign gross (despite not opening in some markets due to the World Cup) suggest a nice profit for Marvel, assuming they didn't overspend on marketing.  Incredibles 2 places with 29MM on a leggy 38 percent drop; its continued popularity with family audiences may have slightly dinged the Marvel topper.  It's now the highest grossing animated film of all-time in North America.  Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom shows with 28.6MM on a 53 percent drop as it crosses a Billion dollahs worldwide.  The First Purge debuts in the fourth slot with 17.2MM, smack in the middle of tracking estimates and doing fine with 31MM since opening on the Fourth against a mere 13MM budget.  Sicario: Day of the Soldado rounds out the Top Five with 7.3MM on a 61 percent skid.

ANT-MAN & THE WASP: The consensus that this is a funnier and ligher film than its predecessor is a bit off.  To be sure, Paul Rudd gets to make Scott Lang a bit more like Paul Rudd, which makes various scenes more overtly belly-laugh funny.  But the original was a pretty breezy heist flick and the sequel is a more traditional comic book tale -- though one solidly within the sensibility of both the Ant-Man comics and the first movie.  And it's entirely successful on those grounds, with the original ensemble hitting on all cylinders while integrating newcomers (including Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne )pretty seamlessly.  There are two bonus scenes; watch them at your own risk.
