NINE ESSENTIAL FILMS About Music Scenes.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation repeats atop the chart with 29.MM on a 47 percent drop, in very bad weekend for the new films.  Cruise & Co now project out to roughly 550-600MM in worldwide receipts -- less than Ghost Protocol, but still a lot of profit. The Fantastic Four reboot placed, but with 26.2MM, about half of initial tracking estimates as bad reviews - including one from its director (see below) - and a disastrous "C-" Cinemascore (worse than Batman & Robin) showed that Fox still has difficulties figuring out its Marvel properties (in this case by attaching no real stars or name director to a property that already underperformed twice).  The Gift showed with 12MM -- above tracking estmates of 7-10MM and looking quite good against a 5MM budget.  The Vacation reboot takes the fourth slot with 9.1MM, and has now recouped its production budget, if not its marketing costs, before opening overseas.  Ant-Man rounds out the Top Five with another 7.8MM, likely due to the Fantastic Four imploding.

THE GIFT: A sort of homage to the family thrillers of the late 80s and early 90s, like Fatal Attraction or The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, with Joel Edgerton not only playing the threat to Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall (as well as their fragile marriage), but also writing, producing and directing.  It succeeds, mostly by throwing in enough twists to make you feel you haven't seen this exact picture before.  It also touches on a topical small-p political issue I won't spoil for you.  Not unlike Ex Machina insofar as itproves that one doesn't need a megabudget and wall-to-wall CG to make an entertaining film on a small scale.

FANTASTIC FOUR director Josh Trank took to Twitter on Thursday to suggest that his 20th Century Fox studio overlords were responsible for the perplexingly awful cut of the superhero reboot.

COURTNEY COX was Jennifer Aniston's Maid of Honor. She was there for her.

JOHN STAMOS admits he tried to fire the Olsen twins from Full House.

KELLY RUTHERFORD refuses to return her kids to Monaco.

FRANK GIFFORD, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Monday Night Football broadcaster, has died. He was 84.

ISRAEL has repeatedly rebuffed offers by the United States to discuss boosting security cooperation in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal, Obama administration officials said.

IRAN: The commander of the Quds Force, who is subject to international travel sanctions, traveled to Moscow recently for meetings with the Russian government, a U.S. official told CNN Friday.

THE FIRST ATOMIC BOMB WAS DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA 68 years ago today. The act that ushered in the nuclear age, but also helped end World War II, still stokes controversy. Three men involved in the attack on Hiroshima share their memories with the BBC. Film showing the effects of the attack was classified for decades, as were the complete (unredacted) "Magic" military intercepts, which tend to show Japan was not about to surrender. Those interested in a relatively neutral view of the events leading to the bombing could do worse than 1995's Hiroshima, a joint Canadian-Japanese production for Showtime.  Out-of-print, and costly.
