Friday, March 13, 2020 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE...
...with ROCKPILE, a band that featured old pals Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds cranking out the rootsy pub rock. Let's start with "Teacher, Teacher" and "I Knew the Bride," along with this clip of "Heart," featuring Billy Bremner, which is odd at the start. And here's the band rolling through Lowe's "So It Goes," and "Heart of the City," plus a cover of Elvis Costello's and "Girls Talk," which many associate more with Edmunds. NATHANIEL RATELIFF visits The Current. AUBRIE SELLERS visits World Cafe. PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND visits KEXP. THE POLICE: When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around. THE WRENS And Their Long-Awaited New Album. THE BEASTIE BOYS STORY has a trailer online. STEVEN MALKMUS talks playing unplugged and playing with Pavement (or not). SQUEEZE is no nostalgia act. NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include Bloodshot, which is currently scoring 35 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; The Hunt, which is scoring 54 percent;and I Still Believe, scoring 47 percent. DISNEY WORLD and DISNEYLAND are canceled. MULAN and THE NEW MUTANTS are postponed. FAST & FURIOUS 9 is postponed. A QUIET PLACE 2 is postponed. THE KIDS' CHOICE AWARDS are canceled. EVERYTHING is canceled. HUNDREDS OF HUNGRY MONKEYS swarm across a Thai street as 'rival gangs' fight over food after tourists who normally feed them stay away because of coronavirus. LYNX KITTENS, scampering in the snow. AN "A" For Effort. THIS BUG is named after Lady Gaga.

THE BANGLES are "Going Down To Liverpool" to do nothing with Mr. Spock.NEW RELEASES: Pitchfork points you to US Girls, Stephen Malkmus, Caroline Rose, and more. BILL'S INDIE BASEMENT has Luke Haines & Peter Buck (w/ Scott McCaughey and more) Honey Harper, Cornershop, and more. DESTROYER visits The Current. JASON ISBELL shares "What've I Done to Help." CHROMATICS share "Famous Monsters." CORNERSHOP: The music that made Ben Ayers. McCOY TYNER, the jazz piano powerhouse, has died at 81. He played in John Coltrane’s quartet and influenced virtually every pianist in modern jazz. SXSW was canceled over coronavirus concerns. THE NUMBER ONES looks at Styx's sole chart-topper, the power-ballad wailer "Babe."
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Pixar's Onward easily tops the chart with 40MM... but that's one of the worst Pixar debuts ever (it's fourth-worst, but two of those are Pixar's first two films, Toy Story and A Bug's Life). Virus scare, a too-early release, or did people just not see the value in a fantasy-based Pixar flick? They better hope it's not the first one. The Invisible Man places with 15.2MM on a 46 percent drop that's pretty good for a horror flick, and excellent for a flick costing 7MM to make. The Way Back shows with 8.5MM which suggests a wash against a 25MM budget. Sonic the Hedgehog slides to the fourth slot with 8MM on a 51 percent drop, bearing the brunt of Forward opening. The Call of the Wild rounds out the Top Five with 7MM on a 47 percent drop, continuing to fall way short of where you want a 150MM film to do. MEGXIT: The Queen takes Harry & Meghan to church. CHRISTIAN BALE is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. JAMES MARSDEN talks about filming The Stand amid a coronavirus outbreak. AMANDA BYNES and her fiancé, Paul Michael, split and ended their engagement. WILL DISNEY crash the economy? QUIBI will offer a 90-day free trial of their streaming service. CRUFTS: The dog show always has a rebel. A LAB, when the mic drops. A SHEEP, caught in a tire swing. A BEAR, seemingly too friendly.
