RANKING ROGER, a/k/a Roger Charlery, the vocalist of the English Beat and General Public, has died aged 56. He had multiple serious health issues. His band fused traditional ska music with elements of pop, new wave, punk rock and latin, and became a pioneer in the two-tone music genre. As the tributes roll in, let's take a brief inventory of the English Beat's highlights. My personal fave may still be "Best Friend," but you might prefer more signature songs like "Mirror in the Bathroom,"  "Save It For Later,"  "I Confess" or "Doors of Your Heart." Or their adaptations of covers like Smokey's "Tears Of A Clown" and the Andy Williams number "Can't Get Used To Losing You." BONUS: more people probably know ROGER's other band with Dave Wakeling, General Public, which had a ht with "Tenderness."

JUSSIE SMOLLET's hate crime hoaxes were suddenly dropped in exchange for forfeiture of his 10K bond and a few hours of community service. It brought swift condemnation from Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who called it a “whitewash of justice.” A week ago, The Chicago PD called for an investigation into Asst. SCOTT WALKER, one of the most innovative and enduring songwriters of the 20th century, has died aged 76. Walker first came to fame in the mid-1960s in the group the Walker Brothers, before creating a string of acclaimed solo albums – Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3 and Scott 4 – that are regarded as some of the most adventurous and boundary-pushing pop albums of the era. He was pop's great adventurer. Thom Yorke, Boy George, Doug Gillard (GbV), Johnny Marr, Graham Coxon, Sonic Youth and Car Seat headrest were among the many musicians paying tribute. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Jordan Peele's Us tops the chart with 70MM, a record opening for an original horror film, and the third best horror debut ever. It's already a big success, but it will be interesting to see how much it falls next weekend, given pent-up demand for the movie and a mere "B" CinemaScore. Captain Marvel finally slides to No. 2, placing with 35MM on a 49 percent drop that might concern Marvel if not for the fact it's already made 910MM worldwide. Wonder Park shows with 9MM on a 43 percent drop. Five Feet Apart takes the fourth slot with 8.8MM on a 34 percent drop. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World rounds out the Top Five (and likely nears exhaustion) with 6.5MM; the threequel will likely wind up a few million short of the sequel.
