WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Equalizer 2 tops the chart with 35.8MM, just a shade better than the original, but continuing proof of Denzel Washington's remarkable consistency as a box office draw: he's rarely in a flop or a blockbuster. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! placed with 34.4MM, well ahead of the original but perhaps less than expected, given how leggy the original was. Hotel Transylvania 3 showed with 23.1MM on a 49 percent drop larger than its predecessors, but this installment is doing as well or better (as predicted) on stronger weekday numbers during the Summer. Ant-Man and the Wasp took the fourth slot with 16.1MM on a 45 percent drop and seems likely to match the original's gross by next weekend. Incredibles 2 rounded out the Top Five with another 11.5M, but looks unlikely to reach 600MM.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

...with LIVE AID! I forgot last Friday was the anniversary of July 13, 1985, on which a trans-Atlantic rock event aimed at aiding starving people in Ethiopia (Its prime movers, like Bob Geldof & Bono, would later discover, actually getting the aid past the Marxist dictatorship would be the difficult part).  Let's start with the full set from Queen, because they knew how to work a Wembley stadum gig.  Your setlist includes: a partial "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Radio Ga Ga," "Ay Oh!," "Hammer To Fall," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions," and "Is This The World We Created...?" But on a more 80s note--and the event was certainly that-- we have U2 (pre-global stardom) with Bono working the crowd during "Bad," a pre-lip-syncing Madonna getting "Into The Groove," Phil Collins (who played both in Philly and London with help from the Concorde) playing "Against All Odds." The concerts featured their share of legends too-- Led Zeppelin blasting "Whole Lotta Love" (with an assist from Collins), Mick Jagger and Tina Turner dueting on "State of Shock" and "It's Only Rock and Roll," and David Bowie (with help from Thomas Dolby and the band) delivers "Heroes." And for a day, they were.
