THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with UPBEAT! Syndicated out of Cleveland, Upbeat never achieved the status of American Bandstand, but attracted any number of major acts from 1964-71, including Otis Redding on the day before he died in that plane crash. Today's selections include Stevie Wonder with "For Once In My Life," Joe South with "Games People Play," Joe Tex with "Skinny Legs and All," Archie Bell and the Drells with "Tighten Up" (which just might be my favorite) Jerry Butler with "Only the Strong Survive," and the O'Kaysions with "I'm a Girl Watcher."

TEGAN & SARA share a new song from their forth-coming 2013 album as well as some picks from their expansive catalog for this KEXP performance.

TWIN SHADOW stops by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a session.

FIELD REPORT stopped by World Cafe for a chat and mini-set of dark, poignant Americana.

TY SEGALL stopped by The Current for a chat and mini-set.

CUTOUT BIN:  From the Who to U2, from AC/DC to Lou Rawls, from REM to John Lennon, plus Graham Parker, Freedy Johnson, Led Zeppelin, Lloyd Cole and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM.

NOW SHOWING: This weekend's wide releases include Argo, currently scoring 92 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; Here Comes the Boom, which is scoring 48 percent; Sinister, currently scoring 62 percent; and Seven Psychopaths, scoring 89 percent.

LINDSAY LOHAN made a hysterical plea for help to her father, as she claimed she was being kidnapped by mom Dina Lohan, but has since hugged it out with her. A good thing, too, as Li-Lo is bailing Dina out of a foreclosure.

He said seven people remain in custody a day after police discovered bomb-making materials in an underground parking lot as part of a probe of an "extremely dangerous terrorist cell."

LIBYA: Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, the former commander of a special US security team in Libya, told Congress at a hearing on the Sept. 11 Benghazi consulate attack that al Qaeda's presence in Libya "grows every day" and that the terror group is "more established than we are" there.
