JON PRATT HONORED AT WHITE HOUSE: I'm not kidding. Jon received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers Thursday in a ceremony at the White House. The PECASE is the nation's highest honor for professionals at the outset of their independent research careers. AND WHAT'S MORE, the linked page has links to audio and video streams (Real format) of the ceremony. The direct link to the video is here. Your Forrest Gump moment is about 13 or 14 minutes into the stream, as Jon shakes hands with Commerce Secretary Don Evans, who earlier refers to the awardees as "a shining example to the youth of today, and the problem-solvers of tomorrow." Congratulations, Jon!

A FURTHER NOTE: While Jon should be proud to receive such an award, I would note that Jon spoke very highly of his teammates at NIST during the 2003 Pate reunion picnic, to people who would have no idea about it. So if this page is accessed by any NISTies, know that Jon gives you your props. And given the level of musicianship of Claude Pate, it seems safe to say that Jon still has an eye for spotting folks who will make him look that much better.
