FORTUNATELY, BY SUNDAY EVENING, the problem seems to be resolved. Knock on wood. Anyway:

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Crazy Rich Asians tops the chart with 25.2MM -- and 34MM since it's Wednesday debut, against a 30MM budget.  While people will focus on the Asian part, it's perhaps equally notable thatit seems like a long time since a rom-com topped the chart, even during a slow movie period like August. And it's based on one of a series of three novels, so potentially a franchise if it continues to run well during the dog days.  The Meg places with 21.2MM on a 53 percent drop and over 300MM in worldwide sales against a 130-178MM production budget.  The debut of Mile 22 shows with 13.6MM and could be in trouble, even against a reported budget of only 35MM.  Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Alpha are headed for a photo finish in fourtha nd fifth at an estimated 10.5MM apiece, with the latter perhaps surprising some of the gurus.  Below the fold, Disney's Christopher Robin holds the sixth slot with 8.9MM on what would be a leggy 32 percent drop if it hadn't disappointed from its opening frame.

KEVIN SPACEY's Billionaire Boys Club earned an abysmal 126 dollars on opening day.

ASIA ARGENTO, among the first women in the movie business to publicly accuse the producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, mad a deal with her own accuser, according to the New York Times.

ARETHA FRANKLIN HAD POWER. Did we truly respect it? Or her humor?

AN AMPAS BOARD MEMBER says the "popular" Oscar is really a prize for a movie that audiences were entertained by. Keep digging!

LIAM NEESON will play a vengeful snow plow driver in Hard Powder. Really.

ALEC BALDWIN does not approve of his daughter Ireland’s sizzling photo.

BRUCE WILLIS & DEMI MOORE reunited for their daughter Rumer's 30th birthday. Get off my lawn.

WINONA RYDER may have married KEANU REEVES in Romania when they made Bram Stoker's Dracula. (This is technically an old story, but they're starring in an unpcoming rom-com, so...)

WATCHMEN is a go at HBO.

SISQO tied the knot with longtime fiance Elizabeth Pham.

THE 23 BEST FILMS of the 2000s, according to the Washington Post and virtually no one else.

I should be back with the full platter Tuesday.
