THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:
... with THE BANGLES! There's no better way to start than with these live takes on "Hero Takes A Fall" and Kimberley Rew's "Goin' Down To Liverpool" for Dave in 1984. It was that sort of rawk (and the hotness of Susanna Hoffs) that got Prince to give them "Manic Monday," their first mainstream hit, from the A Different Light album, which included Jules Shear's "If She Knew What She Wants," Alex Chilton's "September Gurls," and -- inevitably -- Liam Sternberg's "Walk Like An Egyptian." Nevertheless, their fondness for the genres of the mid-60s was still evident in their take on Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" for the Less Than Zero soundtrack, and the psych-garage-bubblegum of "In Your Room" on the Everything album, which yielded their final No.1 hit, "Eternal Flame." The draw from the 60s is a constant I saw them in a club, on a big stage and in a club again -- the last time was at a House of Blues, where they covered the We Five's "You Were On My Mind." However, I'll confess that I put off featuring the band for about a bit, until the Susanna Hoffs solo cover of Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" popped back up on the Tube after an absence. That woman knows how to shake her tambourine. SUFJAN STEVENS streams the third volume of Convocations. TUNE-YARDS plays KEXP. SHAKEY GRAVES plays World Cafe. WEEZER shares "I Need Some of That." JOHN GRANT shares "Rhetorical Figure." DEVON KAY & THE SOLUTIONS share "Liver." LES McKEOWN, known for fronting the iconic Scottish group Bay City Rollers, has died at 65. SHOCK G, famous for Digital Underground's hit song "The Humpty Dance" and his work with Tupac Shakur, is dead. TEENAGE FANCLUB's Norman Blake recalls his teenage years. SUPERWOLVES: Matt Sweeney and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy talk about their 23-year friendship. KEVIN SPACEY: From Triple Threat to Legal Challenges on Three Fronts. JOHN TRAVOLTA recalls dancing with Princess Diana. SCOTT RUDIN's abusive rep inspires a new task force dedicated to rooting out workplace harassment in Hollywood. GAL GADOT's thrid child will be a daughter. FOUR GOOD DAYS has a trailer online. THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT has a trailer online. BRUTALLY HONEST OSCAR BALLOTS are probably better than the show. THE OSCARS may get political, but they probably won't talk about Xinjiang. A DOGGO ran onto the track during a high school relay race in Utah - and covered 100m in 10.5 seconds. A GROUP OF RAYS, swimming. DOLPHINS catch a wave. I wish I could swim like dolphins can swim. A PUPPER, rescued from a moving car. A TURTLE survives crashing through a windshield on I-95 in Florida.
