Surprisingly busy work day, but Hal Blaine RIP. |

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
HAL BLAINE. the drummer who propelled dozens of major hit records during the ‘60s and ‘70s as a member of the “Wrecking Crew,” Hollywood’s elite, ubiquitous cadre of first-call studio musicians, died Monday, according to a statement from family members on his official Facebook page. He was 90. That Variety obit hits some of the highlights of his catalogue -- Elvis, Sinatra, The Crystals, the Byrds, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Streisand, the Mamas & Papas -- but this Wikipedia list goes deeper while still not being complete. This 2011 WSJ profile of the master is pretty nifty. Some of the stories there are repeated in this Fresh Air interview, but with more on the invention of rock drumming. MusicRadar has what Blaine considered to be his 11 greatest recordings. And he's all over The Wrecking Crew documentary, as is evident from the trailer. More tomorrow, though I'll still be mourning. (Don't worry; it was a slow "news" day as well.)

WRECKLESS ERIC: The "Whole Wide World," of course. With Ian Dury on the throne. NICK WATERHOUSE visits Morning Becomes Eclectic. AMANDA PALMER plays the World Cafe. ELLIS plays the Paste studio. BETTER OBLIVION COMMUNITY CENTER: Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst covered the Replacements' "Can't Hardly Wait" at SXSW. THE STRAY CATS return with "Cat Fight (Over A Dog Like Me)" LOCAL NATIVES return with videos for “When Am I Gonna Lose You” and “Café Amarillo.” JONI MITCHELL made the best music of her generation by falling in love, over and over, while defending her sense of self. MERGE RECORDS: 30 Years, 30 Tracks. TORTOISE's Jeff Parker talks beer and music at October. (Thx, LHB.) THE NUMBER ONES looks at Mac Davis' ballad "Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me."
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Captain Marvel tops the chart with 153MM, at the top end of estimates and the top debut of 2019 so far, though Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: Episode IX will challenge it. 300MM+ seems quite likely as a final figure, unless it collapses next weekend (spoiler: not likely). How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World places with 14.7MM on a 51 percent drop; it's a victim of the Marvel juggernaut, but crossed the 100MM mark domestically and is over 400MM worldwide. Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Reunion shows with 12MM on a 55 percent drop that's no surprise for a Perry film; given his budgeting skills, it shouldn't matter. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part languishes in the fourth slot with 3.8MM on a 42 percent drop. Alita: Battle Angel rounds out the Top Five with 3.2MM on a steep 56 percent drop, raising the quesyion of whether this film ever had a chance in the shadow on Captain Marvel. Below the fold, Green Book raked in another 2.5MM in Oscar victory money from sixth place. JENNIFER LOPEZ and ALEX RODRIGUEZ got engaged. LEA MICHELE married clothing company president Zandy Reich. CHANCE THE RAPPER married his childhood crush and mother of his child, Kirsten Corley. JUSSIE SMOLLETT is now facing deeper legal troubles after a grand jury returned 16 felony counts against the actor for falsely reporting a hate crime attack against him in January. THE SIMPSONS episode featuring Michael Jackson's voice has been pulled from circulation. TERRY GILLIAM is not a fan of superhero movies. THE DISNEY VAULT is blowing up. GREEN BOOK is Big in China. JAN-MICHAEL VINCENT, star of Airwolf and The Winds of War, has died of cardiac arrest at 73. GAME OF THRONES, but for housepets. A JAGUAR attacked a woman who reportedly crossed over a barrier while trying to take a photo at a Phoenix-area wildlife park. MAN SWEPT INTO WHALE'S MOUTH lives to tell the tale. THE MANDARIN DUCK has been joined by a Wood Duck in Central Park.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE... ... with THE MINUTEMEN! San Pedro, California's greatest musical export took apart rock, jazz and funk and put the pieces back together in a jagged collage. They are caught here in an acoustic session for a cable-access show from Hollywood, circa 1985. Your setlist includes "The Meter Man," "Corona," "Themselves," "The Red And The Black" (Blue Öyster Cult), "Badges, "I Felt Like Gringo," "Time" (Richard Hell), "Green River" (Creedence Clearwater Revival), "Lost" (Meat Puppets), "Ack Ack Ack," "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" "History Lesson Part II," "Tour Spiel" and "Little Man With A Gun In His Hand." RYLEY WALKER & STEVE GUNN, Live at Union Pool. WILLIAM TYLER, Live at Le Poisson Rouge. CRACKER & CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, Live at Sony Hall. CHAI advance streams PUNK. THE COMET IS COMING advance streams Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. SON VOLT shares "The Reason." (There's also a 1995 concert at the link) THE BLACK KEYS return with "Lo/Hi." LAMBCHOP shares “Crosswords, or What This Says About You.” CANDIE PAYNE brings her updated Northern Soul sound on "I Wish I Could Have Loved You More." DAP-TONE: Eight great tracks from the retro-soul label, just because. ANTLERS: Peter Silberman looks back at Hospice for its 10th anniversary at The A. V. Club. VINYL: Should we call it a comeback? THE NUMBER ONES looks at Three Dog Night's "Black & White," an upbeat and optimistic version of an old lefty folk song.
CAPTAIN MARVEL is this weekend's sole wide releas, currently standing at 82 percent on the ol' Tomatometer. It is a perfectly competent mid-range MCU movie, which is to say it's fine. The Captain's character arc is such that Brie Larsen doesn't have a great deal to work with in the first half. A nifty 90s-centric soundtrack tries hard to make up for this, and it's good, but not as effective as hearing it the first time with the 70'-centric Guardians of the Galaxy. The psothumous Stan Lee cameo here may be his best, at least for Stan Lee aficionados. There are mid-credits and post-credits bonus scenes. IDRIS ELBA will become Deadshot (instead of Will Smith) in the Suicide Squad sequel. ALEX TREBEK, diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer this week, says there's one important date in his life that he'd change. ANDREW GARFIELD and RITA ORA have split; he may be seeing comedian Aisling Bea. R. KELLY: A new underage victim claims he gave her herpes when she was 17 years old.
THE LITTLE DOG has my spot. For now. A HUGE SPIDER breaks into an Aussie automobile. URBAN TURKEYS will not be relocated to South Dakota. IT COMES AND GOES, but not a karma chameleon.
