THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED. It's the anniversary of the passing of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, IA, and it is still bringing people to the historic Surf Ballroom (now a National Historic Landmark), as well as the Riverside Ballroom, where the Winter Dance Party made its penultimate stop. So it's worth linking to an MPR audio feature on the Winter Dance Party and a Weekend Edition piece on Buddy Holly's old classmates.. We'll start with some video of Buddy Holly playing "That'll Be the Day," and "Peggy Sue." There's even less video of Valens, outside this lipsync of "Ooh, My Head!", but there's rare live audio of "La Bamba" and "Donna" on the Tube. And no survey would be complete without the Bopper's signature song, "Chantilly Lace." The tragedy has echoed through the years in movies like The Buddy Holly Story and La Bamba. The latter featured Los Lobos, who would make "La Bamba" a hit again almost 30 years later, with Marshall Crenshaw as Holly, who can be seen here covering "Crying, Waiting Hoping", introduced by Wolfman Jack. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Video from the tour kick-off in Tampa. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE visit World Cafe. BONNY LIGHT HORSEMAN shares “Once On Another Day.” BARTEES STRANGE, on believing in yourself, building a team you can trust, and the joy of walking a different path. OZZY OSBOURNE: NME looks back on his history of on-the-road madness, mayhem and tragedy. YO LA TENGO: Ira Kaplan, on the changing music scene and refusing to rely on others to convey your vision. THE FALL: Mark E. Smith's family rebukes a band comprised of former members. GROUNDHOG DAY! Andie MacDowell, producer Trevor Albert and more tell The Hollywood Reporter about Harold Ramis' beloved film. PAUL RUDD, promoting a real book by the fictional Scott Lang. SWAMP THING: James Mangold may direct the focal point in the first chapter of DC Studios’ slate. VANESSA HUDGENS & COLE TUCKER got engaged. JESSICA SIMPSON, on the married movie star who tried to seduce her. ALISON BRIE, on why she loves streaking. JAMES CAMERON finally admits that Jack might have survived Titanic. HE JUST WANTED to be one of the team. CATS & DOGS, living together. 12 SQUIRREL MONKEYS have been stolen from a zoo in Louisiana, officials say. Brad Pitt unavailable for comment.
