WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The live-action Dumbo tops the chart with 45MM, but that has to disappoint Disney against a reported 170MM production budget, even if it does well in foreign markets. With live-action remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King in the pipeline, the House of Mouse will probably blame the lackluster business on director Tim Burton, and they may be right. Jordan Peele's Us places with 33.6M; that 53 percent drop likely represents pent-up demand for the film and a 128MM total to date against a 20MM budget looks pretty solid. Captain Marvel shows with 20.5MM on a 40 percent drop and will break a Billion dollars world wide this week. Five Feet Apart holds on to the fourth slotwith 6.3MM on a mere 27 percent drop; its 35MM total against a 7MM budget looks like a winner. Unplanned, an R-rated faith-based flick about abortion, manages to round out the Top Five with 6.1MM, roughly the film's production budget.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE:

... with THE BYRDS!  Pretty much because I dig them as we turn into Spring (or Fall).  Let's start with a rare 1965 clip of their breakthrough smash cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man."  There are screaming girls, plus go-go dancers when they hit Shivaree for "All I Really Want to Do" and "Feel A Whole Lot Better."  Next up is a rare sync of "I Knew I'd Want You." There are even more dancers when they cover Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" for Shindig! on June 23, 1965, while I'm pretty sure that's Ed Wynn introducing "Chimes of Freedom."  You might recognize the voice introducing "Bells Of Rhymney" from poolside in August 1965 and "It Won't Be Wrong" from a corral in January 1966 on Where The Action Is.  BONUS:  Want a couple in color?  Here's "Turn, Turn, Turn!" and "Mr. Spaceman." DOUBLE BONUS: A rare 1967 sync of "Eight Miles High."

AVENGERS: ENDGAME won't end like this. Probably.

ANGELINA JOLIE is in talks to star in Marvel Studios' The Eternals. She was born to play women drawn by Jack Kirby..

RANKING ROGER, a/k/a Roger Charlery, the vocalist of the English Beat and General Public, has died aged 56. He had multiple serious health issues. His band fused traditional ska music with elements of pop, new wave, punk rock and latin, and became a pioneer in the two-tone music genre. As the tributes roll in, let's take a brief inventory of the English Beat's highlights. My personal fave may still be "Best Friend," but you might prefer more signature songs like "Mirror in the Bathroom,"  "Save It For Later,"  "I Confess" or "Doors of Your Heart." Or their adaptations of covers like Smokey's "Tears Of A Clown" and the Andy Williams number "Can't Get Used To Losing You." BONUS: more people probably know ROGER's other band with Dave Wakeling, General Public, which had a ht with "Tenderness."

PHIL COOK dropped a surprise LP, As Far As I Can See.

ALL SONGS CONSIDERED: Tracks from Lee "Scratch" Perry, Radiator Hospital, and Cate Le Bon highlight the latest episode.

JON PRATT, Pate's frontman, does a Guitar of the Day video and amuses himself (and me) with some Buddy Holly and James Brown.

JACKSON BROWNE gets over two hours of discussion on this week's Political Beats, with guest Cameron Joseph of TPM.

SHIELA E. talks about recording "Erotic City" with Prince around this time in 1984.

MICHAEL JACKSON will remain in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite the Leaving Neverland controversy.

THE NUMBER ONES looks at Vicki Lawrence's twisty pop-country murder ballad "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia."

JUSSIE SMOLLET's hate crime hoaxes were suddenly dropped in exchange for forfeiture of his 10K bond and a few hours of community service. It brought swift condemnation from Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who called it a “whitewash of justice.” A week ago, The Chicago PD called for an investigation into Asst. State's Attorney Kim Foxx's handling of the Jussie Smollett case.
