FATS DOMINO, the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues singer whose two-fisted boogie-woogie piano and nonchalant vocals, heard on dozens of hits, made him one of the biggest stars of the early rock ’n’ roll era, died on Tuesday at his home in Harvey, La., across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. He was 89.  Fats had more than three dozen Top 40 pop hits through the 1950s and early ’60s, among them “Blueberry Hill,” Ain’t It a Shame” (also known as “Ain’t That a Shame,” which is the actual lyric), “I’m Walkin’,” “Blue Monday” and “Walkin’ to New Orleans.” He reportedly sold more than 65 million records, outselling Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly – combined.  The Guardian esays his impact.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Tyler Perry's Boo 2: A Madea Halloween topped the chart with 21.6MM, a bit below the 28MM debut of the original, but almost certainly clockwork money in the bank against a 25MM budget.  Geostorm placed with 13.3MM against a 120MM budget, which makes one wonder why people still have Gerard Butler headlining movies, when he rarely opens above 20MM anymore.  The answer may be the nearly 50MM in foreign receipts.  Happy Death Day showed wiith 9.4MM on a not-shocking-for horror slide of 64 percent from its debut.  This scary spin on Groundhog Day has grossedover 40MM against a 4.8MM budget, so it'll be all smiles anyway.  Blade Runner 2049 took the fourth slot with 7.2MM on a 54 percent slide; even the bigger foreign grosses aren't going to save this on the big screen.  The debut of Only The Brave rounded out the Top Five with 6MM against a 38MM budget, raising the question of whether real-life wildfires were a wet blanket on a well-reviewed tale of heroism.  Below he fold, The Snowman debuted in the eighth slot with 3.4MM against a 35mm budget, another case where even foreign grosses are unlikely to save it.

JAMES TOBACK, a prominent writer director (The Pick-Up Artist, Bugsy, Two Girls and a Guy) faces sex harassment accusations from 38 women.
