IRAQ: Al Qaeda killed 14 people in attacks throughout Iraq; nine policemen were killed in an assault on a police headquarters outside of Mosul. Security forces captured an al Qaeda leader in Kirkuk and five fighters in Salahuddin.

EGYPT: Clashes between supporters and opponents of former president Morsi wounded 112 people in Suez, and left at least four people dead near Cairo. A health ministry official said 21 people have been killed in attacks in the Sinai since Morsi's ouster. Authorities arrested 18 terrorists who were reportedly planning attacks on foreign embassies, and extended the detention of seven people accused of forming a terrorist group. The family of former president Morsi said they plan to take legal action against the army, which they accuse of abducting Morsi. The EU said the Egyptian army should step aside and not play a role in politics. A senior Muslim Brotherhood official called on Egyptians to besiege the US Embassy for its alleged role in Morsi's ouster.

AFGHANISTAN's parliament has voted to dismiss the country's interior minister in a very public reprimand for the way his 157000-strong police force has failed to deliver security. 

IRAQ: Al Qaeda in Iraq launched suicide assaults on prisons in Abu Ghraib and Taji; more than 500 al Qaeda leaders and fighters escaped Abu Ghraib, while the attack on Taji was defeated.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE:The Conjuring tops the chart with 41.5 million, more than twice its production budget. It also opened bigger than The Purge, and is more likely to have legs.Despicable Me 2 places with another 25 million bucks; its 276 million total eclipses the end total of the original. Turbo shows with 21.5 million (and 31.2 since opening Wednesday); against a 135 million production budget (and significant marketoing costs) this is a disappointment (Consider the Croods opened well over 40 million). Grown Ups 2 drops to No.4 with 20 million; this has almost recouped its 80 million budget. Red 2 rounds out the Top 5 with 18.5 million against an 84 million budget; that's less than the original's 2010 debut.  But the real OUCH this week is the seventh-place debut of R.I.P.D., at 12.8 million against a 130 million budget (that's really likely closer to 155 million). And Ryan Reynolds thought Green Lantern bombed? He's in this one and the voice of Turbo. But R.I.P.D. is such a bomb that folks will likley overlook Pacific Rim's disappointing 57 percent slide in only its second weekend.

SYRIA: The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said President Obama has asked him to determine whether the US "could" stage a military intervention in Syria. The outgoing head of the British army warned that the imposition of a no-fly zone would lead to war. The UN reported that about 6,000 Syrians are fleeing the country every day, a rate not seen since the Rwandan massacres of 1994.

EGYPT: A military source claimed that Egyptian forces had killed 10 jihadists in the Sinai in the past 48 hours. Another source said that a major operation against jihadists in the Sinai will begin on Friday. Former president Morsi and a number of his aides reportedly had their diplomatic passports taken away. The public prosecutor is investigating former president Morsi's decision to pardon a number of Islamist prisoners during his rule.
