UKRAINE: The United States warned Russia on Wednesday against military intervention in Ukraine and said any incursion could lead to a broad international backlash. The European Union and the West are not willing or capable of bailing out Ukraine’s economy, especially if Moscow retaliates with new punitive tariffs, higher prices for natural gas and a cutoff of significant ties to Ukrainian factories and businesses. The lawmakers temporarily controlling Ukraine announced an interim government on Wednesday night, to a mixed reaction. Protesters in Crimea have become the last major bastion of resistance to Ukraine's new rulers. VENEZUELA's opposition ruled out attending a “peace conference” called by President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas following two weeks of protests that have killed 14 people. THE UNITED KINGDOM: Two British Muslim converts who hacked British soldier Lee Rigby to death on a busy street in Woolwich last year were sentenced to prison; Michael Adebolajo was handed a life term and Michael Adebowale will be incarcerated for at least 45 years. HAROLD RAMIS, a member of Second City, SCTV, and one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy filmmakers (National Lampoon's Animal House, Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, National Lampoon's Vacation, Groundhog Day and Analyze This, to name a few), died Monday from complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels. He was 69. In 2004, Tad Friend made the case that Ramis is the father of the modern comedy. He also may have motivated John Hughes (who, like Ramis, ultimately returned to Chicagoland) to become a director.
