Monday, June 14, 2010 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
THE DRUMS: "Forever and Ever, Amen" is a nice jumpstart to a summer week. BONNAROO: NPR was all over it, so there are sets from the Flaming Lips, The National, Dead Weather, the Avett Bros., Mumford & Sons, the Postelles, the Dodos, Mayer Hawthorne and more streaming on demand. DEVO is streaming Something For Everybody via Colbert Nation (check the sidebar). GORILLAZ stopped by the World Cafe for a chat and mini-set. CLEM SNIDE stopped by Oregon Public Broadcasting for a chat and mini-set in audio and video. TOTO: "Hold the Line." Guilty pleasure. TRAGIC MAGIC: REFLECTIONS ON POWER POP - an essay by author Michael Chabon, built around Big Star, but hitting a lot of notes. (Thx, Chromewaves.) LOU REED talks to the Jewish Chronicle about Metal Machine Music. He's contentious... shocka! (Thx, LHB.) MOUNTAIN GOATS: The Salt Lake Tribune talks to Peter Hughes and gets e-mail from John Darnielle. LOS CAMPESINOS! Gareth talks to PopMatters about God, songwriting, death, and growing up. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The Karate Kid wins the weekend with 56 million on a 40 million budget. That's way above the 30-35 million the tracking numbers suggested going into the weekend, and much bigger than a lot of would-bes like Prince of Persia and Sex & the City 2. Apparently, families were ready to move on from Shrek. The A-Team underperforms almost as much as Kaarate Kid overperformed, coming in second with a mere 26 million on a 110 million budget (and a similar 35 million tracking number). Shrek Forever After finally drops from the top slot to the third, with 15.8 million, showing the boost that hangining on to those 3-D screens provides. Toy Story 3's arrival Friday could be devastating to the ogre. Get Him to the Greek drps to the fourth slot with 10.1 million; it will likley fall short of Forgetting Sarah Marshall's total, while costing a bit more to make. Killers rounds out the Top Five (probably undeservedly so) with 8.1 million. GARY COLEMAN: A third will has surfaced -and in it, the actor leaves everything to a mystery woman. CHARLIE SHEEN is going to have a hard time nabbing the plea deal he thought he was getting, because the sheriff ain't budging. TIGER WOODS has been spotted with a beautiful blonde - not his wife - for a second time, according to RadarOnline. LINDSAY LOHAN's assistant just quit, citing exhaustion. JANUARY JONES (Mad Men) struck some parked cars, but cops say no crime was committed. ANGELINA JOLIE as Cleopatra? Makes sense to me. OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL: Sam Raimi has been offered the director's chair for Disney's prequel to the classic. SAUDI ARABIA has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran's nuclear facilities, according to The Times of London. IRAN's nuclear chief says his country will begin construction of a new uranium enrichment plant by March of next year, a defiant announcement days after the UN approved tougher sanctions. Russia has frozen the sale of S-300 air defense missiles to Iran. Factional infighting fuelled by a series of splits since the vote was exposed as rigged last year have come to a head with a row over an attack on attack on the family of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran's Islamic revolution. PAKISTAN: Support for the Taliban in Afghanistan is officially sanctioned at the highest levels of Pakistan's government, according to the Sunday Times. FAT JOE is looking to slim down and find a home. THE TARANTULA COCKTAIL: Big in Cambodia. COW SEDUCES INDONESIAN MAN: Oh, sure.,. blame the victim. A TOAD has undergone extraordinary life-saving surgery after it was accidentally stabbed with a garden fork. CALVIN KLEIN: Obsession for Jaguars?

Barry and the Mamas & Papas cover "Yesterday," Barry drops out for "I Call Your Name" and "Somebody Groovy," but joins in again for "Do You Believe In Magic?", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", and "Precious Time." The big finish is a cover of the McCoys' "Hang On Sloopy". THE SHINS cover Squeeze's "Goodbye Girl" for Levi's Pioneer Sessions. LOVE LANGUAGE is advance streaming Libraries via Sub Pop, which says it "captures Spector-esque walls of reckless sound, cavernous drums, middle-school percussion, and moody swells of stringed instruments, all decorated hastily with stray leads, which bleed beautifully all over everything." BONNAROO: Don't forget that NPR will have sets from bands like Local Natives, Temper Trap, The XX streaming on demand, as well as a live stream from the festival. DELTA SPIRIT stopped by Morning Becomes Eclectic for a chat and mini-set. PHANTOGRAM did the four free songs thing for Daytrotter. THE VASELINES are offering "I Hate the 80s" as an advance track to their first LP in over 20 years, in return for your addy. Or you can check it out on the ol' HM. JANIS JOPLIN is one of Morning Edition's 50 Great Voices. SEALS & CROFT: "Summer Breeze." Because it's that time of year in this hemisphere. KINGS GO FORTH: Andy Noble, founding bassist of the ten-piece, Milwaukee-based soul orchestra, talks to The New Yorker about his former gig as a record store owner. And if you haven't heard the band, you can check 'em out via the ol' HM. RICHARD THOMPSON talks music with The Telegraph as he prepares to curate this year's Meltdown festival today. BYRON COLEY talks in-depth to Perfect Sound Forever. And if you don't know who he is, all the more reason to click. JAY-Z, in a Rolling Stone cover story, talks up indie rock. THE 50 GREATEST GUITARISTS EVER, as ordained by Slash, Brian Lauritzen of KUSC, Fred Child of American Public Media, Gary Wagner of KKJZ, Uncle Joe Benson of KLOS, Smithsonian Folkways, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry. THE BEST OF 2010 (so far), according to eMusic. (Thx, LHB.) THE CUTOUT BIN: From Wire to Manfred Mann's Earth Band, from the Bangles to the Chiffons, from Echo & the Bunnymen to Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, plus Stevie Wonder, the Buzzcocks, the Rolling Stones and more -- this Friday's fortuitous finds are streaming from the Pate page at the ol' HM. NOW SHOWING: The enormous depth of Hollywood's creativity is unleashed with this weekend's wide releases, which are The Karate Kid, which is currently scoring 58 percent on the ol' Tomatometer; and The A-Team, which is scoring 50 percent. LINDSAY LOHAN has been approached by Donald Trump to star in the next "Celebrity Apprentice" season. MADONNA & GWYNETH: How they fell out. BRADLEY COOPER & RENEE ZELLWEGER geting hitched soon? HEIDI & SPENCER: More evidence suggesting their separation is a hoax. LADY GAGA upstaged her little sister Natali at her graduation. SHIA LeBEOUF was busted trying to swipe a paparazzo's camera. LARRY KING's wife left a handwritten note stating she OD'd on purpose and indicated where she wanted to be buried ... this according to police. NORTH KOREA's currency devaluation, apparently an attempt to prop up a foundering state-run economy, was for some the worst disaster since a famine that killed hundreds of thousands in the mid-1990s. IRAN: One day after the Security Council approved new sanctions against them, the authorities in Tehran threatened to revise their relationship with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, using familiar language that has in the past presaged moves to limit global oversight of Iran's nuclear program. AFGHANISTAN: Gen. McCrystal said Thursday that major parts of the military operation to secure Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban movement, would be pushed back because it was taking longer than expected to win local support. Meanwhile, suspected Taliban militants executed a seven-year-old boy in southern Afghanistan after accusing him of spying for the government. A RACCOON dropped in on the NBC25 morning show. What he really wants to do is direct. A SEA TURTLE swam all the way to Florida to return a camera lost in the Caribbean. A JACK RUSSELL TERRIER bit off more than he could chew when he devoured the morning post and the mashed up paper and envelope glue set, locking his jaws together. PET SNAKE strangles owner. Bad snake! THE AFRICAN EYEWORM: Click at your own risk. I warned you.

THE DRUMS frontman Jonathan Pierce talks to Spinner about buzz band status and his synth pop phase. KING KHAN played Australia's Vivid LIVE festival, curated by Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed. Here's a review, though what you really want to read is Khan's insane tour diary. LINDSAY LOHAN says she is "working to get proof" that she is clean, after her SCRAM bracelet went off Sunday. GARY COLEMAN left bittersweet funeral instructions in his will. Todd Bridges claims his former co-star left a "huge" secret pension. LARRY KING's wife Shawn overdosed on pills and RadarOnline obtained the 911 call. BRITNEY SPEARS may be sued for sexual harassment by a former bodyguard. Another ex-Britney minder went to court in 2007, similarly complaining about the her erratic behavior and insistence on walking around naked. KENDRA WILKINSON is still trying to play the victim over the sex tape (she tried to shop herself before taking a share of the profits), but she's talking to E! (whith whom she's had a relationship), so it's taken seriously. ROSAMUND PIKE may join X-Men: First Class as Emma Frost. IRAN: The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency singled out Iran for the first time as a special case because of suspicions it is hiding experimental nuclear weapons programs. Nevertheless, the list of Iranian individuals and entities to be sanctioned by the UN Security Council today is modest. That's partially because Iran building a formidable diplomatic network. C. Shocka. AFGHANISTAN: The Taliban are burying dirty needles with their bombs in a bid to infect British troops with HIV, according to Tory MP and ex-Army officer Patrick Mercer. S & M TATTOOED SPHINX CATS: Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. HEY, ARE THOSE SMUGGLED SONGBIRDS in your pants? I guess that's why they call him Sonny Dong. NEW PR0NOGRAPHERS release a video for "Crash Years." (You might need to select the 480p version to get it to run properly.) THE NATIONAL played a mini-set at World Cafe Live. Aaron Dessner and singer Matt Berninger spoke to Pitchfork about how the band has changed over the years, how embarrassing it is to be on stage, and how they feel about their "lost" albums. GRAHAM PARKER also played a mini-set at World Cafe Live. ARCADE FIRE: Live clips of new songs surface. TEENAGE FANCLUB is streaming their Shadows, and is profiled at the Times of London. BLACK MOUNTAIN reveals "Old Fangs" as an advance track from their upcoming Wilderness Heart. PRINCE dropped "Hot Summer" in time for his 52nd birthday. Not a classic, but not bad, symbol-dude. OWEN PALLETT covers "Game of Pricks," for The A.V. Club Undercover, which put me in mood of the Guided by Voices original classic, natch. MOUNTAIN MAN: Inspired by the traditional folk, country and Appalachian stylings of Gillian Welch, this trio are the female Fleet Foxes. MAVIS STAPLES talks to Pitchfork about her upcoming LP, which features production by and songs from Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. SLEIGH BELLS talk to Exclaim about Spike Jonze, M.I.A. and being years ahead of their dreams. RYAN ADAMS has written 11 new songs inspired by his recent trip to Ronnie James Dio's funeral. LINDSAY LOHAN's court-ordered alcohol-monitoring bracelet was trigged Sunday evening during an MTV Movie Awards afterparty. Judge Marsha Revel issued a bench warrant for her arrest on Tuesday; new bail has been set at 200K. UPDATE: The bench warrant for Lindsay Lohan's arrest has been recalled. CHARLIE SHEEN's plea deal hit a snag. Apparently, the woman who supervises the work release program said she wasn't going to honor the deal because she had problems with the way it was structured. HEIDI MONTAG officially filed for legal separation from Spencer Pratt. The real deal, or doubling down on a hoax? TOM CRUISE says a Les Grossman movie is in the works. THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS ratings were down, despite appearances by much of the cast from the night's big winner -- "Twilight: New Moon" -- and the much-hyped debuts of trailers for the latest installments of both the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises. Oddly, the network apologized for the frequent profanity unleashed during the show. GEMMA ARTERTON (Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia) has wed on the sly. MICHAEL FASSBENDER (Inglourious Basterds) will likely turn up as a villain in X Men: First Class or Spider-Man 4. JAMES CAMERON says his comments last week that the British oil giant is a bunch of "morons" were "taken out of context." NORTH KOREA: Kim Jong Il shook up his country's leadership ranks in a move that appeared part of a broad strategy to consolidate his power before he passes control to his son. AFGHANISTAN: Afghan observers and Western officials are interpreting the forced resignations of Afghanistan's two top security officials as another worrying sign of President Hamid Karzai's increasingly impulsive decision making and deepening isolation from his backers, both within Afghanistan and abroad. The International Crisis Group is concerned about the Afghan military unimprovement. IRAQ: President Jalal Talabani on Tuesday called the first session of Iraq's new parliament for June 14, more than three months after an inconclusive election that has yet to yield a government. OVERTURNED TORTOISE AID: Let's go to the video. A DECADES-OLD CHIMP-NAPPING STORY still makes for good reading. A VET had to be rescued by firefighters after she became trapped when the horse she was sedating fell asleep on top of him. A SURFER PUNCHES A SHARK, then reportedly rode a wave to safety in Western Australia.

Tuesday, June 08, 2010 - 08:00 AM Posted by: Karl
SHE & HIM: "In the Sun" and the dancetastic (500) Days of Summer version of "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" are your twofer Tuesday, because Ken King and I got to see the duo last night. Barely, that is. Millenium Park was a mob scene and the crowd control was sufficiently bad that folks on the lawn really couldn't see the band, except by chance. That being said -- and without a close enough view of Zooey Deschanel to distract me -- I can report that M Ward runs a tight band with well-drilled harmonies. Ken and I did sneak alongside the pavillion near the end of the set for a better view, though the band was still pretty small (and Zooey smaller still) . The encores were pretty much the same as at Coachella -- covers of "Roll Over Beethoven" (letting M take the lead) and "I Put a Spell on You" (letting Zooey go at full blast), though I think both sounded better live than on the Tube. What you miss in that last clip is M Ward niftily looping a lick over a riff before escorting Zooey offstage. I recommend you see 'em... but then again, I recommend I see 'em next time. UPDATE: Here's the Chicago take on "I Put a Spell on You." NEW RELEASES: Albums from Against Me!, Blitzen Trapper, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, The Young Veins, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Delta Spirit, The Cure and more are streaming this wek via Spinner. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM is advance streaming American Slang. LAURIE ANDERSON is advance streaming Homeland, with cameos from Antony Hegarty, Four Tet's Kieran Hebden on keyboards, Lou Reed on guitar, John Zorn on saxophone and vocal assistance from Tuvan throat singers. THE DIG did three free songs for Daytrotter. THE RASCALS cover Smokey Robinson's "Mickey's Monkey," because it's been over 9 months since I last linked it. NPR has become a major player on the indie rock scene. The WaPo figures out what regular visitors here have known for years. FRIGHTENED RABBIT: Scott Hutchison talks to The Scensestar about the new album, missing the Coachella festival due to the volcano and, well, mixed drinks. BAND OF HORSES: Ben Bridwell talks to the Wall Street Journal about becoming a free agent and almost going bankrupt in the process. MARVIN ISLEY, whose muscular bass lines propelled the later hits of his classic sibling band The Isley Brothers, died Monday in Chicago at age 56. THE 7 MOST POLARIZING LPs in recent memory, according to the Houston Press. (thx, LHB.) GARY COLEMAN's ex is already cashing in on the fmr child star's death. The executor of his estate is locking horns with her, too. CHARLIE SHEEN will begin doing work release today as part of his 30-day sentence ... and one of his tasks will be to coach actors in "Same Time Next Year." ALANNIS MORISSETTE: You oughtta know she got hitched. MILEY CYRUS is going to great lengths to shed her ‘good girl' image. CHRISTIE BRINKLEY dished out a lot of tough love after her daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, overdosed on pills and was hospitalized in December. TOM CRUISE reprised his Tropic Thunder role as Les Grossman at the MTV Movie Awards. Credit where credit is due. People forget that dancing made him famous. HEIDI MONTAG & SPENCER PRATT: More evidence suggesting their breakup is a hoax? TILA TEQUILA's downward spiral has hit a new low. The deeply troubled former reality star posted a video on her website of her bloody arm that supposedly had been sliced at the wrist. IRAN has been able to smuggle advanced technological equipment to its uranium enrichment plant in Natanz via a complex smuggling route based in Dubai. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has expressed readiness to escort aid convoys seeking to pierce the three-year Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. AFGHANISTAN: Pres. Karzai on Sunday forced out his spy chief and his interior minister, a surprise move that eliminates two key American allies as the United States deepens its engagement here. CRICKET SEX VIDEO reveals the insects' wild mating behavior. Which makes it ironic that humans tend to associate the chirping with nothing going on. Oh, here's the clip, which includes some inter-species violence, too. AN ESCAPED ELEPHANT tours Zurich after dark. DOGS can raise the alarm over prostate cancer through their incredible sense of smell.
